Hello everyone

I want to pursue MS in CS with a specialization in ML/AI

Profile:
7.87 CGPA (B.Tech CS) passed in 2014 from IIIT Delhi (not IIT Delhi -.-)
GRE 325 (168Q)(157V)
TOEFL - 113

3 years work experience as a software engineer in Rakuten, Tokyo -
API development using Java, distributed large-scale software using Cassandra and one ML project using bootstrap aggregating
1 research paper published in IEEE conference - it was on iris spoofing and how to counter it using SVM
2 course projects based on image processing and pattern recognition using unsupervised learning
2 Academic LORs from professors I worked with on my Btech project
1 Professional LOR from my previous product manager

My university shortlist:
Arizona State University (applied)
SUNY Stony Brook (applied)
UCLA (applied)
UCI (started application)
UBC (started application)
NCSU (started application)

Please help me decide and categorize among the following :
UNCC
USC
UCSD
Georgia Institute of Technology
Purdue University West Lafayette
UNC Chapel Hill
UMCP
Ohio State University
NYU
University of Colorado Boulder
Rutgers University
UC Davis
NWU
NEU
CMU
UT Austin
UIUC

Perhaps I should also mention that I had applied to these universities last year but got rejection from all. Maybe something went horribly wrong Sad
USC, UMCP, UMass Amherst, Gatech, Columbia, USC, Univ of Alberta
I have a similar profile, this is scary. Rejected from USC too, wow. You had your publication by then right?

Yes. I suppose the rejections were because of my poor SOP. Everything was kind of rushed and last moment-ish last year, so that could be another reason. Hopefully you are not in a similar situation Wink
I'd consider dropping UMass, Columbia and probably even UMich from the list.

I have added some more info. Please review it. Thanks.
Could you please tell us what additions you made exactly, so we can reevaluate as needed, on that specific basis?

Hello. I have given more details about my work and projects. Also, added some more to the uni list.
Okay. Before we proceed, please see point #1 below and fill out your UniSearch profile accordingly. Tag me and I'll respond ASAP.

Thank you. I have updated my profile here. Please check.

Please note that I have only applied to ASU, UCLA, SUNY Stony Brook as of now. Rest I am still shortlisting/in progress. I am targeting 12-15 universities. Is this too much? What do you think of the universities listed in my profile? Are any of them safe for me?
Also please categorize the universities listed in this post. I might not even bother applying to super ambitious ones like UT Austin and the likes. Still, would like to have your inputs.
Thank you for updating the UniSearch profile, that helps us guide you better, and also helps future applicants.

About your list:

Arizona State University (applied) - safe-mod
SUNY Stony Brook (applied) - ambi
UCLA (applied) - ambi
UCI (started application) - ambi-mod
UBC (started application) - ambi
NCSU (started application) - mod
UNCC - safe, you can drop this, unless you like the research being conducted in the Charlotte Vis Center (which is one of the best in CV in the south)
USC - mod-safe
UCSD - ambi
Georgia Institute of Technology - ambi
Purdue University West Lafayette - ambi
UNC Chapel Hill - ambi
UMCP - ambi
Ohio State University - mod
NYU - mod
University of Colorado Boulder - mod-safe
Rutgers University - mod
UC Davis - mod
NWU - ambi
NEU - safe
CMU - ambi in general, but which program are you specifically applying to?
UT Austin - ambi
UIUC - ambi

My recommendation would be to apply to say 3-4 ambitious schools (and apply to those where you see the most research being conducted that's in line with your interests), 3-4 moderate schools, and at most 2-3 safe schools. Also, have a look at the research being conducted at the Univ of Utah and see if you'd like to apply there are a moderate or a mod-ambi school.

Hello The_Observer

Thank you for your help. Can you suggest some safe universities based on my profile? I will further do some research based on what they are doing for ML. I really thought ASU, SUNY Stony Brook, UNC Chapel Hill, OSU would be safe for me as I have seen candidates without any research experience and lower gpa/gre getting in. Now I am at a loss as to what is a "safe" university. Your categorization is making me bit worried Razz
UNC Chapel Hill as a safe? You're either confusing that school with UNC Charlotte which a completely different school, or are quite mistaken, I believe. About the other schools that you've said are "safe": admission trends are subject to change every semester, so I normally don't call a school a safe if I have even a little doubt of that, just to be on the safe side. Evaluations done here (or anywhere else, for that matter) are best guess estimates - so they might be off for some people, either by a little or by a lot. It is up to you how to take them, and how to use them to hedge your bets, which all depends on your appetite for risk Smile

Thank you for your help. What do you think of SUNY Buffalo, SJSU for safe schools? I think you are right about calling a university "safe". Can you suggest me some more safe schools based on my profile? It would be really helpful.
What do you think of applying to a bunch of ambitious schools if I really want to increasing my chances of getting into such school? I think my profile is decent enough. Would it increase my chances if I increase the number of applications?
