Hello Seniors,

I'm applying for Fall '18.
Please evaluate my profile and provide suggestions on safe/mod/ambi.

GRE: 318 (Q165 / V153 / AWA3.0)
TOEFL: N/A (My goal is at least 100~105)

Undergrad Major : Sociology (Hanyang University / South Korea)

GPA : 3.66/4.0 (I was the valedictorian in the College of Social Sciences as well as the top in my major)

Work exp:
1.A milltary office(TI&E officer / first lieutenant / 28 months)
2.Samsung Electronics (H.Q / 7 Years)
- An online marketer (Mobile app store - Billing & Settlement / 5.5 years)
- Data Analyst (Mobile products / 1.5 years)

LOR:
1. Company - strong
2. Prof - strong
3. Not determined

University :
1. Georgia Tech. - M.S. in Analytics
2. University of Texas Austin - McCombs - M.S. in Business Analytics
3. Purdue - Krannert - Business Analytics and Information Management
4. University of Maryland College Park - Smith - M.S. in Business Analytics
5. Arizona State University - WP Carey - M.S in Business Analytics
6. Michigan State - Broad - M.S. in Business Analytics
7. Notre Dame - Mendoza - MBA/MSBA Dual degree
8. USC - Marshall - M.S. in Business Analytics
9. SMU - Cox - M.S. in Business Analytics
10. Fordham - Gabelli - M.S. in Business Analytics
(If I can, I would apply to dual degree for MBA)

Also, I'm worried about AWA score(3.0)
If I have a GRE test again to get higher AWA score, I would miss Round 1 of some universities.
I cannot sure which way have more merit for me. Round 1? or higher AWA score?

Please kindly let me your opinions.
Many thanks.

Hi @[weisskatze]

Welcome to Edulix...

Your GRE is good; great experience and GPA. Th only weakness for a data science may be your undergraduate degree being on social science as opposed to math-oriented majors. If you are lucky, the admission committee may see this rather as a strength as such backgrounds sometimes bring a new and fresh perspective.

Next, your list tends to be a bit overpopulated with ambitious (highly ranked programs). I advise adding moderately ranked and what we call 'safe-bet' programs.

Ambitious/Ranked
1. Georgia Tech. - M.S. in Analytics
2. University of Texas Austin - McCombs - M.S. in Business Analytics
3. Purdue - Krannert - Business Analytics and Information Management
4. University of Maryland College Park - Smith - M.S. in Business Analytics

Drop 1 of them (maybe Purdue).
Moderate
5. Arizona State University - WP Carey - M.S in Business Analytics
6. Michigan State - Broad - M.S. in Business Analytics
7. Notre Dame - Mendoza - MBA/MSBA Dual degree
8. USC - Marshall - M.S. in Business Analytics

Safe
9. SMU - Cox - M.S. in Business Analytics
10. Fordham - Gabelli - M.S. in Business Analytics
Add a safe bet program like Georgia State University, George Mason University, UTD, etc.

Tweak it one more time......

cheers,

EE

Thank you for your kindness~!

Although my major is sociology, I'm very confident about math.
I took all A+ grades in some statistics classes related to sociology and management.

And, I'll apply for just 5~6 schools, not all.
Thus I'll seriously consider your advice.

[Determined List]
7. Notre Dame - Mendoza - MBA/MSBA Dual degree
8. USC - Marshall - M.S. in Business Analytics
9. SMU - Cox - M.S. in Business Analytics
10. Fordham - Gabelli - M.S. in Business Analytics

And I'm considering Austin or Eli Broad as well.

Thank you so much again. : )

Hi @[weisskatze]

Try to focus on your work experience. In your SoP focus on how each job, you had prepared you for the next. The focus is "Pivot". For example, you can say something like, serving in military instilled discipline in me. Meeting the deadlines and getting work done etc. Then say something like working as an online marketer, I had to deal with a lot of data which increased my curiosity in Data analytics hence the next pivot to Data Analyst. You want to learn more and learn it with the best hence the MS in Analytics.

This Pivot theme should help you overcome your undergrad background. Be sure to focus that your varied experience provides you with an edge over others as each of those different fields has taught you something new and how you combine them all to get things done in your life, like a "Strategic thinker".

Hopefully, this helps you. As for the University eval, EE sir has done it.

All the best my friend Very Happy

Hope you get into the college of your dreams Smile

Thanks a lot!!!

Your advice will be helpful for my SOP.
Although I also consider various experiences as my best strength, I've become to have more ideas for my SOP thanks to your advices.

And... one more thing.
Do you agree with EE's opinions related to universities?
I cannot apply many, so I should select carefully.
Please let me know your own opinion about universities I mentioned.

Thank you very much again. : )

I agree with the evaluation of EE and some great piece of advise on SOP.

My suggestion would be to go through some more programs, look at their curriculum, tuition and the type of roles their alumni got into. This will help you cut the list to 5/6. Your work experience should be able to compensate with your under-grad major. IMO your diverse profile will attract the universities and everyone likes to have a diverse cohort.

Revise the list and tag me.

Thank you so much.

I took courage from your advice.

Hi @[weisskatze]

I don't think EE sir intended you to apply for all 10 universities. He sorted them out for your convenience. Since you are going to apply for 6 universities, my suggestion is 1-3-2 (ambi, mod, safe) or if you do not want to take even a slight chance of risk then 1-2-3(ambi,mod,safe).

So, cut down your list to 6 universities and re tag us.

SMU Cox's BA program is good. As for Notredame and USC, I do not know the BA course offering but brand-wise are pretty good. On Fordham, I do not know anything.

Based on your determined list. my suggestion is - Mod - USC, ND, ASU
Safe - SMU, UTD or Georgia State UNiv or Oklahoma State univ

As for Ambi, I am biased towards UT Austin.

I revised my plan thanks to seniors' advises.
My strategy is 1/2/3(ambi/mod/safe).
I make the list table with my opinion.

Hi @[weisskatze]

I like your organized way of thinking. If you are going for 6 programs, then the list represents a well-balanced choice of programs. Gabelli, Cox, and Jindal should be should be do-able.....

Keep us in the loop as you make progress with your application. By the way, please spread the work about Edulix in South Korea......Will be nice.....

cheers,

EE

Good going @[weisskatze]

Make sure you present your SoP well.Edit, Re-edit and Re-edit before you consider it as the final draft.

I wish you luck as much as "Weed" from "The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor"(Goddess of Fortune always stays by his side Smile in form of Seoyoon). I don't know what its Korean name is, it is a highly enjoyable novel Smile
