Need help deciding if I should take the GRE again - crazykid123 - 08-10-2017 10:15 AM

Hello everyone, I'm new here.
I'll get to the point. I have a score of 326 (Q: 165, V: 161, AWA:5) in the GRE. My aim is to get into one of the top 10 universities for a Masters in Mechanical Engineering. I don't have that great a GPA in my undergrad (66%, University of Pune), and to make matters more difficult, my Quant score seems to be pretty low. Would you advise me to take the GRE again?
Thanks in advance!

I think 326 for ME is good enough for most moderately ranked programs. Ranked programs like Berkeley, Michigan, Purdue, OSU, Cornell, GT are kind of tough with your GPA which may be hovering around 3.0 (barely - based on our unscientific conversion which is not that far off from WES type of prediction).

At any rate, shoot for 3 ranked programs, 5 moderate and another 3-4 safe programs.

Please do come back with your initial list and we will help you narrow it down.

cheers,

EE

Hi @[crazykid123]

Welcome to Edulix Very Happy Congratulations on your scores Smile

I agree with EE Sir, 165 in Q is more than good for Mech. No point in retaking GRE. Though if you were going for an Analytics or Data Science track, it would make sense for you to retake to improve your quant score.

All the best my friend Very Happy

Thank you MSMaverick and Edulix_Editor. Yes, I was planning to get a post up in the profile evaluation thread. Just a question. How do you define moderately ranked programs? Are they something like 20-50 ranked programs?

@[crazykid123] I know it sounds cliched, but ranks are dime a dozen. Each publication has its own criterion and biases. And most of the rankings you see are given for Undergrad programs. It is better to rely on the reputation of course offering rather than general ranking.

College'A' might have the reputation for being the best college on earth, but the dept you are aiming for might be below standards. Going in blindly with the rankings might not be totally helpful.

Yes. Good point! This is some great advice. So, how do you objectively rank how good a university would be for you? I mean, obviously Stanford would be up there for everyone based on reputation, but when it comes to the costs, it would probably move down a couple of ranks or so.

Maybe Add UIUC as a desperate measure. Our university seems to love Chinese and Indians who are ready to shell out the moolah.

My suggestion is to do a weighted average. Take your 5 most imp factors(finance, course reputation, Location advantage, weather etc) and assign weights to them. let us say finance matters most to you, give it something like a 0.30, weather 0.1 etc.

Assign 1-5 ranks to your colleges.Multiply and see how it turns out.

And as VM says, if you are ready to spend cash,he is ready to help you at UIUC Razz
