Mine was scheduled on 2nd April at 4 pm. There was one more guy in the same slot. Also two more people were waiting from the previous slots. My interview started at around 6. It lasted for 30-35 mins. There were two experts in the panel. The technical expert asked me three puzzles on algorithms. The puzzles were okish. I tried to explain my approach which lead to some technical debate. Then Mrs. Mody, the other expert, asked me a few qs related to my hobbies, newspapers, etc.

Overall it was a good experience.

All the best to others. Very Happy

Here is my experience

First of all, a huge thanks to edulixians for all the help. I am from Pharmacy background and I was kind of hoping to be a unique applicant. However on the day (14th May 3 pm) there were several other B.Pharm students (around 10) mostly from Mumbai University.

The super tiny lobby does come as a surprise to an outsider. Anyway, based on edulix posts, I was expecting to wait around 4 hours, however things moved along pretty fast. I think I was done by 4.

There were two interviewers, Mody mam and another subject expert. First Mody mam began with a few things, sifting through my application - How did you get a 10/10 in this year, does it mean you got a 100%; which subjects did you study in this year - i listed out - (followed by some inside joke on regulatory affairs between the two ladies); How many marks does each subject have?; So your mom's a prof, which college? How tough is it to get into BITS? So why are you going to USC if it is so costly?

Then the technical expert began - she asked 4 - 5 questions, I couldn't answer two questions precisely but answered most of them. I was really surprised that she asked me to draw stuff. I was able to do it right (thank god :rollSmile The whole time she was smiling encouragingly, so that was great.

Finally Mody began with her questions. She asked what I did other than this - there was discussion about dance (bhangra) and Jane Austen, which was interesting. Then she asked me if I read newspapers, to which I, sadly and truthfully answered, not regularly. She was not happy and asked how would I represent India in Southern California if I am not well informed. She didn't let me answer, she continued with how much I would rate the current government. Then she asked my view point about the beef ban. They seemed satisfied with my response, Mody mam said 'okay, good'.

Overall my interview was good, or so I feel. More importantly, it ended on a good note. But unlike many experiences that I have read on edulix, my interview lasted only 15 minutes and I wonder if that's a good sign

Sorry for the delay. My experience. I am going for a journalism program, though my background is in engineering.

Had my interview on May 16 at 12 pm. Had to wait for some time before being called in. Mrs Mody and the subject expert were waiting. I got asked questions on my field of specialisation, why I am doing it and how it will help me pursue a career in journalism. Know your field and your reasons for doing the program well. If you do that, you can lead the discussion to where you want. Got asked about who is my role model? I really couldn't name any ONE role model. Arnab? Nope, never.

Afterwards, I was asked for my hobbies. I said playing guitar, watching TV shows. Discussion veered towards Game of Thrones (I read the books long before it became a TV show), so got asked whether I liked the books or show (Books obviously). Favourite character (Jaime, then Tyrion). Not Jon Snow? (Nope, he takes too many stupid decisions).

That was it. Seemed pretty decent to me. Just relax and answer to the best of your abilities.

Destination: Stanford University

Below is my experience vis-a-vis tata endowment loan scholarship.

My interview was scheduled at 11 AM. I was late to the venue, so mailed them intimating the same. Reached at 11.30AM. The guy there assured that 30 min delay is not a problem. My turn came at around 12PM. But guys be on time. Wink

There were 2 interviewers. They were cordial and offered me seat. They started with which course I am going for. Then why I am going for Computer Engineering and missing out on other parts of ECE. I told them that my intention is to specialize on VLSI architectures as I am more interested in implementation. They asked about are my interest in communications and algorithms. To which I replied I will study the algorithms and communication concepts only to the extent that will be needed to implement the architectures for those protocols or algorithms.

Next question was why this particular university. To which I gave the reason that a guide from the university has agreed to advise me for my thesis. They asked me the city in which the college is located. What arizona (as my destination college is ASU) is famous for? What is the specialization of my guide and what are his papers on? Why I want to go for MS even though I have a well doing job, which I am pursuing for last 5 years? I answered that I want to move into design and there is not much scope of invention in my present job, etc.

Now they asked me about my extra curricular activities. to which I mentioned my hobbies. Will I return to India?

Then there was a small discussion on VLSI companies. They asked me to name a few of them. They asked my about my favorite CEO. Then a short discussion on different kinds of business models that work out for companies.

In a nutshell, it was more of a discussion. It lasted for 20 minutes. Not much technical questions. Maybe, because I had 5 years of experience. I felt, if you are sure why you are going for the program and what you want to achieve from the program, that will help a lot. Also be thorough with what you have mentioned in your SOP.

Next was the document verification part. I did not had many documents which were mentioned in the mail. The lady was kind of frustrated with me and asked me to mail the documents later. So better take all the documents mentioned in the mail.

Later I received a mail asking for my I20 copy and some other documents, which as per the posts means I have got the scholarship. The amount will be mentioned later. The gift scholarship if given is given after we send them our first year mark sheet of the course.

Updating that I received 6 Lacs loan scholarship with 50k as gift scholarship for flight ticket.

Hi This is Abhijit,

So, my interview was at 11 AM. I am from Mechanical Engineering school and was looking at MS in Mechanical with specialization in combustion. There were two people, The Director and Prof. Amit Agrawal.

Questions that were asked
1. Tell us about yourself and your goals? (just about myself, back ground etc.)
2. which universities you are looking at and why? (Answered two universities shortlisted with the names and description of the professors under which I want to work)
3. What did you work on exactly ? (referring to my 1 year work at Greaves Cotton, where I was in calibration and testing of single cylinder diesel engines with BS IV Engines)
4. What exactly you calibrate ? (Maps for fuel inj. timing, quantity, etc.)
5. There were a few more detail technical questions asked which are faded in memory.
6. I was also asked about the future of combustion engines, pollution, my home state affairs and my opinion s and a few informal ones regarding favorite cities, goals in life and more)

Personal advice, Be honest and real, know why you should do MS/PhD. I would like students from a similar background (like me) to not lose hope and try their best. If you dream is genuine you will get help. All the best.

Don't fear the future, for future is a result of today. Do your bit today and forget about the future.
