nimbus_2000: Ich habe nur von Michel Thomas sprache kurse gelernt...

I really don't know what will be the level achieved through it...
Maybe you know?

But it had been of immense help...

"Sprache" and "Kurs" should begin with caps (because they're nouns) Smile . Or you could combine them to make it "Sprachkurs" I guess.

antidive!!! I have been always bad at recognizing sarcasm.... I went through my post at least three times .. But couldn't find any "twist"

spiketospica: Thanks for correction. Noted.
Btw...Michel used to call that getting the ball over the net.... Meaning getting yourself understood... Inspite of some mistakes.... Glad again that I was almost right...

Yeah, I think it's more important to be understood (not that being correct isn't). We can all nitpick when we're more proficient.

Seprac No sarcasm intended Seprac! I checked the post on my mobile first and the app showed the first two lines where you said you'd called Studentenwerk, so I assumed it was going to be a long conversation and thought I should check it when I'm back home. I was back home, and the 'twist' was when you switched to English with 'verstehen Sie Englisch?' Smile

Guys I want to introduce you to GearBklsh.
He is doing his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering (entirely in German) at the RWTH Aachen. He had studied German in India before starting his Bachelors in Aachen. He is also my German mentor here. Wink
Any queries regarding technical German or life in Germany can be directed to him. He will be able to give you a lot more insights into it.

Thanks nimbus ans spiketospica, I'm quite humbled by that intro. Very Happy

Hey guys, like nimbus mentioned already, I'm on the verge of finishing my Bachelor's in Mechanical Eng and will start my Master's shortly. I'm quite new to this forum (again, thanks to nimbus), but I'd be glad to answer any doubts you might have about the German language and culture. Smile

Binge watching Extra auf Deutsch and have a query!

This is the episode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TVLy2jv...TlWP#t=181 in question.

And at around the 3.29 mark, Nic goes..

Quote: Autsch.. was ist denn mit der los?

mit der? How, why, what does he mean Confused ? Is it rather mir ihr?

"So much of what is best in us is bound up in our love of family, that it remains the measure of our stability because it measures our sense of loyalty."

GearBklsh would be a better judge of this.
But let me tell you what I think it is.

You can refer to the third person in German as "der" or "die".
z.B. "Der Stefan ist auf dem Weg." oder "Die Sascha ist wirklich verrueckt geworden."

Nic is referring to Sascha in the third person.
To complete his full sentence:
Was ist mit der (Sascha) los?
("Der" because it is the Dativ form of "Die")

Nimbus is correct. Hundred points to Gryffindor! Very Happy
You'll find this very common in informal situations amongst friends and fellow students. Actually, I was very surprised to observe that much of the Umgangssprache that you hear in Germany isn't taught in most German courses, where the focus is on Hochdeutsch. Nothing bad about that, but it takes getting used too. Very Happy

@[antidive] @[nimbus_2000]

This actually reminds me of a funny video I saw on Youtube, about the Umgangssprache (don't worry it's not this bad everywhere Very Happy ).

Dunno much about extra3, but the video is a spoof of the original Telekolleg series, which was like a television classroom. Kinda like the old Doordarshan videos where they taught science, current affairs etc. on TV in the early 90s. Wink

nimbus_2000 Thanks for the explanation! So detailed and clear...The internet is beautiful! Again thanks for the link to Extra Auf Deutsch. Loving it!!

GearBklsh I've always wanted to award points to Gryffindor! I just spent a lot of time watching the rest of these spoofs as well as the original Telekolleg! Haha. I didn't understand a lot of these, but I did get the last joke in the Imbiss-Deutsch video above Very Happy

Its happened to me here getting takeaway from restaurants.. "Sir yaaru sir chicken tikka?" ( Sir, who is the chicken tikka? ) . Yes, I'm the chicken tikka. Thank You. Laughing

Oh and FYI, Doordarshan and its variants still have these programs! Only, now they write on whiteboards and smile a wee little bit more Smile

Hehe, yeah exactly! I guess grammar goes for a toss in any slang in the world, regardless of bratwurst and chicken tikka.
Lol ok, seems that one is still a gamechanger/cash cow for Doordarshan. Very Happy
