hi,
I am a B.E and applying for masters
in EE . I have to write draft recos for
my profs. I have written a draft for my
research advisor which is about 350-390
words long . It covers most of my
qualities with examples. I want to know
if 350-390 words is too long. My other
recos are shorter . Since this is my
research advisor I have tried to lay
maximum stress on this.
Secondly if i have a choice betwwen a
reco form my Head of department who can
give me a good over all reco with
general examples and a reco from some
other professor who can write indepth
specifics about me . Which would be
better . Considering i already have 2
recos , 1 from my research advisor and
1 from someboy else familiar with my
research .
All responses are appreciated.

Hi Rajiv,

It is commonly accepted that single page recommendation letters is sufficient enaugh (I am not sure how many words would it be). Do not give too many details but stress the ones you have strength. Just think that those admissions office people and departments receive hundreds of applications and you should not make it boring. I think the two recos you mentioned is good enaugh unless they ask for more.

Best wishes,

YAlcin

hi Yalcin,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I am still unsure about the second part of my query. Would a reco from my HOD be more helpful than that from a professor who can write more details about me. Most colleges i am applying to require 3 recos.
Thanks
Rajiv

go for the recco from the research professor who knows your work well. the fine details he mantions regarding how closely he knew you and your work will contain more weight than the HOD's which will be more in general terms and rather vague...Ali Toure
