Visa Experience – Mumbai Consulate, August 21st 2014
University: Technische Universität München
Course: MSc Informatics, Winter Semester 2014

Received Admit: 24th July
Attestation of Blocked Account Documents: 31st July
Documents delivered: 4th August
Booked VI Appointment: 4th August
Blocked Account Confirmation: 6th August
Transferred the Blocked amount: 8th August
Confirmation of Transfer of Blocked amount: 11th August
Visa Decision Email: 18th September
Submitted Passport for stamping: 18th September
Received Passport: 23rd September

My appointment was at 11:15 AM, I reached the embassy at 10:20 AM and was let in. They gave me a checklist to arrange 2 sets of the documents in the following order:

  1. Application form
  2. Declaration of Authenticity
  3. Covering Letter
  4. Letter of Admission
  5. Agreement between the student and university if any
  6. Proof of Financial means (Blocked Account Letters)
  7. University Degree Certificate
  8. TOEFL Score Report
  9. Copy of travel insurance policy
  10. Copy of passport

Along with these a set including a photograph, two DD form copies and the DD of ₹4900.
I hadn’t received the TOEFL score card so I attached the print of the score report on the ETS website.
I went to the counter which checked the documents. They checked the DD, DD forms and application form and assigned me the token no.

Me: Good Morning.
VO: Good Morning, Pass me 2 sets of Documents, DD forms and your Passport. (Started Checking the Documents)
VO: Which university will you be attending?
Me: TUM
VO: Which course
Me: Masters of Science in Informatics
VO: When and where did you complete your Bachelors?
Me: May 2013,
VO: What have you been doing since then?
Me: Working at from June 2013.
VO: Pass me your semester wise grade sheets and Degree Certificate. How many backlogs did you have in college?
Me: 1, (Didn’t have semester wise grade sheets, so passed Transcipts)
VO: These won’t do. You have to provide us with semester grade sheets.
Me: (Explained how transcripts would include all my registered credits including all the fail grades and showed those to her)
VO: Ok, I am passing you a form (DAAD questionnaire). Fill it up. (She started typing)
VO: So, your course is completely in English?
Me: Yes.
VO: Does your course have any tuition fees?
Me: No, only the semester contribution of 111 Euros.
VO: Do you have German language proficiency?
Me: No.
VO: Do you have the original TOEFL score card?
Me: No, I have attached the print of score report on the ETS website.
VO: Ok, (Gave me back original degree certificate, original transcripts and fee status print)
VO: She asked for finger print scans. Complete the form (DAAD questionnaire) and come back.
Me: Ok.
Me: (Completed the form and passed it to her)
VO: I have stamped your passport acknowledging that you have applied for student VISA. You will be informed through mail or phone after your application has been processed. It will take around 6 to 12 weeks.

The questionnaire had the following questions:
  1. Why Germany? Where did you come to know the course?
  2. Why did you choose this course?
  3. Course structure or/and modules of your course. (Specialization if any and study structure of the course)
  4. Other universities you have applied to. How does the course differ from the current course?
  5. Researchers in your field? Please do not mention professors from your course
  6. % marks/grades in 10th, 12th and bachelors and medium of instruction for each
  7. Gaps in education if any (more than 6 months) after 10th, 12th or Bachelors.

Additional Notes:
  1. Don’t forget to take your semester grade sheets, I had a near miss with this
  2. If the course had tuition fees apart from semester fees, then everyone was asked show proof of financials apart from blocked account and fee receipt if already paid.
  3. Mumbai Consulate may not consider EPF as proof of financial means. As was the case with one of the applicants. (His course had tuition fees hence needed to show additional financial docs apart from Blocked Account. She insisted they he show either Bank statements or FD)
  4. You cannot apply for a Schengen VISA after your VI till you get a confirmation.
  5. If you have an existing valid Schengen VISA, it may be cancelled. This was the case for one other applicant who was planning to travel to EU for work earlier and was applying for a VISA (Not sure which type of VISA) at a later date for Germany. He was asked to submit the letter from his Employer stating the same and apply for VISA after he returned. If you have a similar scenario, it would be better to enquire with the embassy first.

The consulate does not accept the passports directly, instead they have to be submitted through VFS for stamping.

Hope this helps…Tag me for VISA queries for Mumbai Consulate

which travel insurance you took ?

I got my travel insurance from reliance general. You can get it from any insurance companies mentioned in this.

Is it mandatory at Mumbai consulate?

It is required to have travel insurance as per the checklist given at the embassy during the VI. I believe you can submit it layer during stamping. But it is better to have during the VI rather than after as it is required to issuing a VISA.

Can you share the procedure for the same ?

You can buy travel insurance from any of the companies mentioned in the link online. it takes 15 mins to get it and would cost around Rs. 500-1000. You don't need any health check up for it.

For how many days it has to be taken.

It should be valid from the date you travel to the date of enrollment at your uni. Look at this for all info on VISA.

Thanks in advance

UPDATE: I received my VISA and have updated the original post.

Mumbai consulate does not accept passport from applicants now, instead we have to submit it through VFS.
