90 ECTS and 120 ECTS : Whats the difference ?

Hello Seniors,

I have applied to the following universities in Germany
1. RWTH Aachen (120ECTS)
2. TUM (120ECTS)
3. TU Kaiserslautern (90ECTS including Thesis)
4. KIT (120ECTS)

I read in earlier posts that 120 ECTS = 90 + 30(Credits for Thesis)
My question is if one intends to pursue a PhD later(US or EU), does this make a difference?

I edgoogled but couldn't find a definite answer to this question.
I would like to know if someone has personal experiences to share in this regard.

Tagging nimbus_2000 for you. He was in a similar 90 credit course so I think he can help you.

Hi topdrive,

Are you sure that the course you applied to in TU Kaiserslautern has 90 credits? Generally 120 credit courses are offered by TUs and Universities whereas 90 credit courses are offered by FHs.

I think it makes a difference if you want to pursue PhD. First of all, if you do a 90 credit course from a FH, it would be more industry/application oriented than research oriented. So professors would hesitate to select you for PhD. They want students with research background. I am not saying that it is impossible after a 90 credit course, but it is difficult. I remember reading somewhere on Edulix about people doing PhD even after a degree from FH. So after a 90 credit degree from a FH, if the professor likes you, I heard that you have to do some pre-PhD kind of course. I am really not sure about this thing, but it's what I have heard and read here and there. I believe this kind of option is not available in US. So it would be really difficult to do a PhD in USA. I also know that a 90 credit degree is not valid for Govt jobs in India. They only recognise 120 credit courses.

I know my answer is not very helpful, but I am just trying to share what I know.

All the best!

Your answer still had some useful info!

Hi, I am no expert on this and my answer might not be really good, but as per my experience (talking with seniors and others), there shouldn't be any problem with respect to private jobs back in India with a German Masters. Having said that, there is something with Govt. Jobs in India..

refer to this link if it helps: (googling "recognition of german masters in India" gives some links and you can get an idea from there)

And personally also speaking, as long as the university is recognised, there should not be any issues with respect to your jobs. Your profile plays an important role

P.S I am in the same league as you - infact trying for an FH. I frankly dont care about this credit thing - you know your stuff, have a solid profile, they are bound to hire you Smile

The thing is 90 ECTS credit courses are not really known in India. A regular German degree with 120 ECTS credits is obviously recognised in India. But with 90 ECTS it is kind of different. But in private sector it should be fine, you will just have to convince them. I believe that this 90 ECTS structure is well suited for German job market. But I also think that if you work in Germany for some years after your 90 ECTS course, then going back to India in private sector should not be a problem.
