Hello,

I do not know if this is too early but I really want to finish shortlisting universities as soon as possible Smile

I am currently a junior undergraduate at the Dept. of Electronics Engg., IIT(BHU), Varanasi. I have a CGPA of 9.32, and rank within the top 5 in my batch. My GRE and TOEFL scores are:
-GRE: 330 (170Q + 160V, 4.0 AWA)
-TOEFL: 117 (30R + 30L + 27S + 30W)

I have no research papers to my name.
Infobank profile: praharsh242

I will be applying for MS in CS/EECS in fields of AI and ML. I will also be applying to the related fields in computational biology and bioinformatics involving ML.

I am at a loss for which universities to apply to and would be grateful if you could rate the following schools depending upon the mentioned specialization:

List of Universities:
1. Stanford University
2. University of California, Berkeley
3. University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign
4. Carnegie Mellon University
5. University of Texas, Austin
6. Georgia Tech
8. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
9. Virginia Tech
10. University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
11. University of California, San Diego
12. Purdue University

Please let me know if the above universities are too ambitious, and if so, what other
universities would be suitable for my profile.

Thanks in advance!

Your list is heavy on highly ranked programs. Add some moderate programs like ASU and UFL. Also 1-2 safe bets - just in case. Buffalo, for example.

cheers,

EE

2. University of California, Berkeley - Super duper ambi (Drop it since you have no prior research work)
3. University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign - Ambi
4. Carnegie Mellon University - Ambi
5. University of Texas, Austin - Super ambi
6. Georgia Tech - Ambi
8. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor - Ambi
9. Virginia Tech - Mod+
10. University of Minnesota, Twin Cities - Mod
11. University of California, San Diego - Mod+ to Ambi
12. Purdue University - Mod+ to Ambi

Please let me know if the above universities are too ambitious, and if so, what other
universities would be suitable for my profile.

First things first, report this in Fall 2018 group if you want more suggestions from different people.

You have a nice profile. But the above list is too heavy. Add some safe/mod category universities by replacing the super ambitious ones. You could add one of the UCs, NCSU, Stony Brook.

Is cost going to be a deciding factor for you? If so, I'd suggest that you give a shot at UWisconsin, UCLA, UMass instead of those super ambitious ones which are really expensive (Stanford, CMU, UMichigan).

You have good scores. If you can use your research internship in way that it shows your potential to conduct independent research, it can compensate the lack of papers. Also, there's plenty of time. See if you can write 1 paper and at least get it accepted in a conference or a journal before application deadlines.
