Dear Seniors,

My Profile:
GRE - 321 (Q-168/V-153/AWA-4.5)
TOEFL - 106 (R: 25, S:28, L:24, W:29)
GPA 9.232/10 [EEE]

[*] As of now, I do not have any professional work experience.
[*] I have 2 months of Internship tangential to my interest.
[*] I have 3 international papers published [1 in wireless communication and 2 in Embedded Systems], none in IEEE though.
[*] I have completed few projects in Embedded Systems through during college.
[*] I'd like to pursue my Master's in Embedded Systems, more inclined toward software-side.

Please evaluate my profile and your take on the universities according to my profile.

[1]Arizona State University
[2]University of Texas Dallas
[3]University of Texas Arlington
[4]UNC Charlotte
[5]University of Florida
[6]University of Massachusetts Amherst
[7]SUNY Stony Brook
[8]Iowa State University
[9]North Carolina State University
[10]University of California Davis
[11]University of California San Diego
[12]University of California Irvine
[13]University of Minnesota- Twin Cities
[14]Virginia Tech
[15]Texas A and M University College Station

I want to get into a Master's with Thesis program. I believe it will help me assess if I should pursue a PhD later. Any suggestions or advice which might aid me down this track will be really helpful.

Please let me know what I can provide you further for better assessment.
Thank you for your time.
Have a great day.

You can short down the list to 8-10 universities and tag 5 or fewer people.

All the best Smile

[1]Arizona State University [Active CES Dept.] - Safe
[2]University of Texas Dallas [They have some really good courses + the location] - Safe
[*]University of California San Diego [Irvine is better but also more ambitious] - Mod++/ Ambi
[4]UNC Charlotte [well defined course structure/ chances to get into research] - Safe (You should probably drop, because you will get in to much better)
[5]University of Florida [active labs] - Safe
[6]Iowa State University [This one is good for Embedded] - Safe
[7]North Carolina State University - Safe
[8]University of Minnesota- Twin Cities - Mod+
[9]Texas A and M University College Station - Mod

K@Ira
I suggest you to replace UNC Charlotte with University of Colorado Boulder. They have an MS in Embedded Systems, if you are only interested in that.
Also, I feel you could possibly add some more ambitious ones. I feel you are going too safe with your GPA and GRE, complete with related papers.

Thank you for your input.
Does University of Colorado Boulder has higher ROI than UNCC?
Is it better in terms of internship/job opportunities?
(sorry for the cliched question but I believe you can understand my plight.)

I know there are firmware engineers, embedded S/W & H/W engineers. I believe there must be some common skill set they all should be sharing. As you have firsthand experience of the field, could you give a few pointers about what are the necessary skill sets required in the industry there?

It will be really helpful for us noobs on the other side of the world.
Thank you again Smile

Well, Boulder surely has much better reputation. Very few people would even have heard of UNCC (none in my internship knew). Also, Boulder has a better all round coursework.

In terms of opportunities, Boulder has the edge, but at least for Fall 16 people, quite a few got internships from UNCC too. But, at the end of the day, Boulder's name will help you.

In terms of skills you need to get an embedded job, these following will come up very handy.

1. Very strong C programming skills. (pointers, data types sizes, etc)
2. Experience with RTOS.
3. Knowledge of all common communication protocols. (SPI, USB, I2C, UART, etc)
4. CAN bus (important enough to mention independently)
5. Some experience/ projects in IOT.
6. Good knowledge about interrupts and writing ISRs.
7. Basic operating systems knowledge.
8. Debugging skills.
9. DMA
10. Last but not least, knowledge about the architecture of different microcontrollers.

Projects are very important, and therefore, try to stack up some good projects in your resume.

Also, to expand your scope, it is always better to take good operating systems courses, and learn about Linux kernel, and write at least some device drivers. Systems software engineers are highly paid, and do exciting work!

Hey, thank you for replying Smile
I will definitely consider UC-Boulder in my final list. I checked their i20 for last year for a different department, it doesn't look very pocket-friendly.

I'm really grateful for your invaluable input. At the very least, I can get somewhat prepared instead of landing there clean-slate.

This community is thriving because of you seniors Smile

All Hail Edulixans.

You're welcome Smile

The tuition for MS in Embedded Systems Engineering at Boulder is a bit lesser than typical engineering Master's.

It is $12150 per semester for MS in Embedded, and $16092 per semester for normal MS in ECE (Fall 17).

Source - https://bursar.colorado.edu/wp-content/u...051017.pdf

If you do plan to apply there, I can get you in touch with some of my friends and alumni there.

And yes, Boulder do overly inflate the living expenses section of the i20 Sad i20 amount will be close to $50k for MS Embedded, even with the reduced tuition.
