Hi Team,

I graduated from IIT (BHU) Varanasi, Integrated Dual Degree (5 years Btech+Mtech) in CS in 2016. I'm currently working in Samsung Research Institute, Bangalore as Senior Software Engg. at its Advanced Technology Lab. I have 1.5 years of experience till now and I am interested in pursuing MS in Data Science (DS) or MS in CS with specialization in DS.

My Profile:

* GRE: 324 (Q:167, V: 157, AWA: 3.5)
* TOFEL: Not Taken (expecting > 105)
* CGPA: 8.14/10
* Publications: 2 Conference papers (Indexed in IEEE Xplore Digital Library)

* Work Experience: I am currently working in Advanced Technology labs, which is a research group of Samsung Bangalore, as a senior software engineer for the past 1.5 years. I am working in "IoT Query and Analytics" team, which is working towards designing a query engine (idea patented by Samsung) which can query multiple heterogeneous DBs in Natural Language.

Hence I have good command in MapReduce, Hadoop, Spark, HBase, MongoDB, Cassandra, Solr, DynamoDB, MySQL Server, PostgreSQL and R.

* In college, I have worked on Recommender Systems, Evolutionary Algorithms for clustering in large social graphs, Image processing using ML techniques etc.

* Teaching assistant for the course on Artificial Intelligence in my 5th year at IIT BHU.

* Internship: I have done my technical internship (2 months) at Goldman Sachs, Bangalore

I believe I'll be able to write a good SOP and will get decent LORs from my manager and professors at college.

I have a great interest in DS and hence I want to pursue only DS (either MS in DS or MS in CS with specialization in DS) at some good universities but I feel, my cgpa and awa score might become a bottle neck for admits.

I am considering the following schools (tentative):

1. Columbia (MS in DS)
2. Univ. of Washington (MS in DS)
3. NYU (MS in DS)
4. Brown Univ (MS in DS)
5. Rutgers (MS in DS)
6. USC (MS in DS)
7. Georgia Tech (MS in DS)
8. TAMU (MS in DS and CS both)

Please evaluate where do I stand in here and suggest me some schools.

Thanks.

* TOFEL: Not Taken (expecting > 105)
* CGPA: 8.14/10
* Publications: 2 Conference papers (Indexed in IEEE Xplore Digital Library) Awesome

Related work ex, great!

* In college, I have worked on Recommender Systems, Evolutionary Algorithms for clustering in large social graphs, Image processing using ML techniques etc.

* Internship: I have done my technical internship (2 months) at Goldman Sachs, Bangalore

Nope. You have a very well rounded profile. You should not worry one bit. You have all the credentials needed to be in a top 15 school, just not mess up you SoP and LoRs. You will do good. Also, having had similar thoughts last year, I believe going MS in CS with a specialization in DS will open more opportunities for you, although getting an admit will be a bit tougher (but you have the profile to get through) than MS in DS. I recommend going through my profile evaluation too, its in my signature.

I am considering the following schools (tentative):

1. Columbia (MS in DS) - Ambi-Mod
2. Univ. of Washington (MS in DS) - Ambi-Mod
3. NYU (MS in DS) - Ambi-Mod
4. Brown Univ (MS in DS) - No idea, probably Mod coz of new program
5. Rutgers (MS in DS) - Mod-Safe
6. USC (MS in DS) - Mod-safe
7. Georgia Tech (MS in DS) - No idea, probably Mod coz of new program
8. TAMU (MS in DS and CS both) - Mod

Please evaluate where do I stand in here and suggest me some schools.

Suggesting more options:
CMU - MCDS or MS in ML (both are Ambi bets)

I'd recommend you to aim for MS in DS at only the topmost universities (CMU, U.Wash.,NYU,Columbia) as they are recognized. At the same time look to apply for MS in CS at other universities, such as Gatech - Ambi, UCSD - Ambi, UMN - mod-safe, NCSU - safe. Gatech and UCSD, for example, have great CS departments and offer specializations in AI and databases, and you would end up doing almost the same courses as in MS in DS but with more recognition, degree value and without limiting your scope for future. Take out USC from your list - it's absurdly costly and too much intake with nil scholarship/assisstantship chances. Try and research on your list and my recommendations, and form a final list of maybe 11-13 programs. Then we can trim it down to 9-10. I hope this helped.

Thanks.

Mod-safe to Mod
---------------------
Brown Univ (MS in DS)

Univ. of Maryland (MS in CS)

Safe
----------------------

Stony Brook Univ. (MS in CS)

I wouldn't bother about the rest.

1) Please mention as many details as possible about your academics, research and work-ex, in terms of projects worked on, technologies used, roles/responsibilities handled, papers published/presented, awards/honors obtained, etc. All those have to be put in the misc details section of your UniSearch profile if you expect any help on Edulix. Also, before requesting for profile evaluations, please go through this excellent post.

2) Please take some time out to read these three threads in their entirety. PLEASE do that before asking questions about universities from a comparison perspective, or jobs, or coursework, or H-1B visas, or "placements", irrespective of which univ/department/program/major you're applying to.

I love to read, and then I regurgitate. I write - a lot - as my posts here and on other outlets would show. I do not make apologies for what I write (and how long it is). I do not sugarcoat things either. I don't tolerate vague questions, for any reasons - ignorance arising out of an inability to locate information when the necessary tools to do so (i.e. the internet, libraries, university websites, other forums/bulletin boards, etc.) are readily available, is not any kind of an acceptable excuse.
