Fall 2018 | MS | CE | GRE 315 (Q-170/V-145/AWA 3.5) | GPA 8.5 | BITS Pilani

MS in Computer Engineering/ Electrical Engineering, Fall 2018
GRE: 315 (Q:170, V:145, AWA:3.5)
TOEFL: Yet to give.

At present, working in a top MNC as ASIC design engineer. Work experience of 5 years 1 month by Fall '18.

I have good LORs, but all from the Industry. Passed out a long time ago, so no LORs from academia.

GPA: 8.5/10 [B.E. Electrical and Electronics Engineering from BITS Pilani]

Universities shortlisted:
1. NCSU
2. TAMU
3. SUNY, Stony Brook
4. ASU
5. UFL
6. UMTC
7. UC Boulder

Tagging seniors:

Please evaluate my profile and classify the universities based on possibility of getting an admit.

And please let me know if I should retake my GRE considering my low verbal score.

And does getting good score in TOEFL make up for verbal in GRE?

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply .

Can you let me know why UFL and TAMU would be ambitious? Is it because of,
1. my low verbal score?
2. lack of LORs from academia?
3. lack of research papers and publications?

TAMU obviously because of GRE. UFL, a combination of factors.

Please use AdmitTrend tool to look at average GRE of admitted students.

I am thinking to retake GRE. But at max I feel I can score 320(q-170/v-150). I now have 315(q-170/v-145). Do you think its worth it to retake GRE for increase of 4-5 points?

Do you think my profile would look much better if I had 320 instead on 315 in GRE?

If you can pull your verbal score up to 150 without losing much on the quant, it might be worth it. Again, most schools - not all, though - take the best total score, and then look at the individual sectional scores of that attempt. So, even if you score less overall than the older score, the older one would be considered by most schools. Again, this isn't a guarantee, but it is a possibility. It depends on your appetite for risk here: getting a verbal of 150+ is definitely good, but do you think the risk of getting a lower quant score is worth the possibly higher verbal you might get (if at all)? If you're confident of getting a higher verbal score in your next attempt, as well of not losing a lot on the quant, retake it. Otherwise, don't. Depends on the amount of risk you're willing to take.

1) Please mention as many details as possible about your academics, research and work-ex, in terms of projects worked on, technologies used, roles/responsibilities handled, papers published/presented, awards/honors obtained, etc. All those have to be put in the misc details section of your UniSearch profile if you expect any help on Edulix. Also, before requesting for profile evaluations, please go through this excellent post.

2) Please take some time out to read these three threads in their entirety. PLEASE do that before asking questions about universities from a comparison perspective, or jobs, or coursework, or H-1B visas, or "placements", irrespective of which univ/department/program/major you're applying to.

I love to read, and then I regurgitate. I write - a lot - as my posts here and on other outlets would show. I do not make apologies for what I write (and how long it is). I do not sugarcoat things either. I don't tolerate vague questions, for any reasons - ignorance arising out of an inability to locate information when the necessary tools to do so (i.e. the internet, libraries, university websites, other forums/bulletin boards, etc.) are readily available, is not any kind of an acceptable excuse.

RE: Fall 2018 | MS | CE | GRE 315 (Q-170/V-145/AWA 3.5) | GPA 8.5 | BITS Pilani

1. NCSU - Safe. Good for front-end, but not very good
2. TAMU - Mod. Good for Mixed Signal. Great RoI.
3. SUNY, Stony Brook - Safe. I would suggest dropping this one
4. ASU - Mod. Good for Mixed Signal and CE.
5. UFL - Safe
6. UMTC - Mod/Safe. Great work in back-end digital VLSI
7. UC Boulder - Not sure. Moderate I think and good for CE

You can add Gatech, UCI or UMCP to your list

And please let me know if I should retake my GRE considering my low verbal score.

Depends. If you have time you can. This score is perfectly fine for universities in your list. My suggestion is NO.

And does getting good score in TOEFL make up for verbal in GRE?

Nope. You just need to meet the TOEFL score requirement of the univ.

Good luck.
