Fall 2018 | MS | CS | GRE 320 | Q - 161| V - 159| B.Tech - 66.2%|48 month work ex

Profile:
College: KIET(2009-2013), UPTU
Percentage: 66.2%, Electronics and Communication Engineering
GRE: 320(161Q,159V)
Planning to apply: FALL-18
IELTS: Awaiting(but I dont think getting a good score should be an issue).

NOTE: The topper from my college got 78% (for taking out CGPA etc.), and the university topper got 83%.

Work Experience:
1. Worked a web developer in a goverment company(5 months).
2. Worked with Cognizant Technology solutions for over a year as a QA tester(13 months).
3. Taught myself programming and interned with a lot of startups in banglore for free(part time, though don't have anything to show for it).
4. Joined one of India's leading startups from the ecommerce space while it was very small. Made several enterprise level systems from scratch since then(30 months), and now a memeber of 6 people core team in the company.

Projects(non work obligations):
1. Help set up a company from scratch, and acted as(and still do sometime) interim CTO for it(now a team of about 15 people).
2. Contribute to various smalltime open source projects(one is used quite widely).
3. Wrote a simple algorithmic trader (but didn't really get the time for researching exact trading oppurtunities, studied a lot of maths for this though)

Co-Curricular:
1. Have a Grade-1 ceritficate from Trinity College (London) in western classical music.
2. Volunteer at an animal shelter.

Though I have mentioned I would be interested in computer science, I am also open to Maths.

Research Interests(or fields I would like to work in further):
1. Computer Science: Algorithms and Data Structures, Cryptography and Combinatorics.
2. Mathematics: Stochastic Processes, Probability Theory, Non Linear Dynamics.

Research Experience: None

Questions about profile:
1. How much of concern should my low score be?
2. A lot of people have mentioned that switching from ECE to CS is not an issue, does it hold true for mathematics?

The list that I have compiled(I am also thinking about applying to Canada):
Cornell
Yale
Purdue
NYU
John Hopkins
SUNY BUFFALO
Arizona State University

I understand that most of them will be a little to ambitious for me, but I just want to understand what my chances are?

Thanks in advance.

Cornell
Yale
Purdue
NYU
John Hopkins
SUNY BUFFALO
Arizona State University

This list looks heavy. By heavy I mean ambitious. Please look around and see how people have short-listed their Universities. Read and find about safer schools.

Super Ambitious
Cornell
Yale
Purdue
NYU
John Hopkins

Ambitious
Arizona State University

Moderate
SUNY BUFFALO

Switching is fine but it requires good grades since you need to impress admission committee to select you in this programs over others who have their undergraduate in CS. Basically your listed universities are acad centric which is why low gpa will hurt the chances. I would suggest applying to 2-3 universities in Ambitious column and apply for some safe universities as seniors will suggest The_Observer. Please tag 3-4 seniors to get a reply. All the best

Hi,

I'd like to thank everyone for taking out the time to review my profile. I have more research regarding this subject, and come up with the following observations:

NEED to consider Canada(seems much more cost effective).

The final list I have figured out is:

Ambitious
Georgia Tech(US)
University of Toronto(Canada)
Mcgill University(Canada)
University of Alberta(Canada)

Moderate:
University of Manitoba(Canada)
Concordia University(Canada)
SUNY Buffalo(US)

Safe:
San Diego State University(US)

I more inclined towards making a Ambitious heavy list, since it wouldn't make any sense(financially + from a career prospective) going to an OK kind of a university . Though I have added a safe university, I would probably not prefer going there at all(given I have a pretty sorted life right now, and wouldn't be much of value add).

As mentioned by Chirantar (thank you for reviewing my profile) , the universities I am targeting are grade oriented universities, I have a couple of thoughts around improving my chances for them(please tell me if this would be relevant):

1. Publish Research Papers(A couple of my friends are doing their PhDs, I am thinking about collaborating with them on a research paper).

2. Publish all the material from the open source projects on the web(kinda like this: https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf).

3. Have clear cut research topics I'd like to purse and show sufficient self-exploration/Independent research in it.

4. Maybe re-taking the GRE and target a 330+ score.

Please tell me if any of these would help in getting through.

Thanks,
Mightmosquito

There are other universities than SDSU, which you might want to consider as safe schools.

1) Please mention as many details as possible about your academics, research and work-ex, in terms of projects worked on, technologies used, roles/responsibilities handled, papers published/presented, awards/honors obtained, etc. All those have to be put in the misc details section of your UniSearch profile if you expect any help on Edulix.

2) Please take some time out to read this and this thread in their entirety. PLEASE do that before asking questions about universities from a comparison perspective, or jobs, or coursework, or H-1B visas, or "placements", irrespective of which univ/department/program/major you're applying to.
