Hello Seniors

I'm in dire in need of help regarding university shortlisting. I'm very much inclined towards research and would want to pursue PhD (close to certain) after my MS. My field of interest is Natural Language Processing (NLP).

Scores:
College - Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi (A Central University)
CGPA - 9.33/10
Branch - Electronics & Comm. Engg.
GRE - 322 (Q:167, V:155) (I am yet to give GRE, this is the minimum I've got in past 4 mocks)
TOEFL - 103

Internships:
1. Summer Intern at Language Technologies and Research Center(LTRC), IIIT-Hyderabad. 2.5 months, worked on a research project in NLP.

2. Programming Intern at IIIT-Delhi, 1 month (no LOR), worked in computer vision.

Papers:
1. Short paper in ICON-2015 (Best NLP conference in India and South-East Asia), first and only author

2. I've been working on another paper from last 1.5 years, it is based on ML and NLP and would be ready to submit in a top-tier NLP conference by the time I apply. So, Under-Review only but I'll heavily mention about it in my SOP that what I've worked on and how I'd like to continue my research on this very topic during and after MS.

Projects:
1. NLP project on word-vectors and sentiment analysis (minor)
2. NLP project on Q/A system using NLIDB (minor)
3. NLP project on text summarization (minor)
4. Wireless Weather Stations (major project of B.tech, not relevant)
5. Misc. embedded system projects (electronics based, not relevant)

LORs:
1. IIIT-hyderabad assistant prof. (internship mentor, NLP field, strong)
2. Jamia Millia Islamia prof. (ex-HOD, 2 courses taught, mod-strong)
3. Jamia Millia Islamia associate prof. (1 course, major and minor mentor, strong)

Senior, please also keep in my that I'm changing majors from ECE to CS, would that hurt too much? I would show this in my SOP backed by my work in NLP and programming. Also, I've passed out of B.tech in 2017 and have been working on that top-tier NLP paper from last 4 months with two Princeton undergrad (remotely). Should I mention about my association with them in my SOP? How are they going to perceive my 4 month gap knowing that paper is still under-review and not published?

Shortlisted universities (Keep in my mind, I'm research inclined):
Ambi:
CMU (MC in CS and MS in HLI)
Cornell
UMass, Amherst
GaTech
University of Washington
Columbia University
UPenn
UMCP

Mod:
UT, Austin
USC
NEU
Johns Hopkins
University of Colorado, Boulder
University of Illinois, Chicago
Ohio State University

Safe:
Arizona State University
UT, Dallas
STONY Brook

Shred some light on
UCLA
UCSD
UCSB
USSC

I'm not applying to all, this is just a broad list. Feel free to add/remove or move-up/move-down any university.

Thank you!!

1) Please remove all self-categorization from your posts. It might mislead other applicants reading this thread.

2)
Quote:Should I mention about my association with them in my SOP? How are they going to perceive my 4 month gap knowing that paper is still under-review and not published?

Yes, I see no reason why you cannot do this... but if you want to, try not to exceed 1 paragraph about this (~5-7 sentences, at most).

3) A recommended split-up of the # of universities you choose to apply to is about 30% ambitious ones (10% super ambitious ones, on top of that if you want to), 30% moderate ones and 30% safe ones. So, first decide how many schools you want to apply to.

CMU (MC in CS and MS in HLI) - I'm not sure if you can apply to 2 programs at the same time, check that by mailing CMU. If not, pick one program
Cornell - mod-ambi
UMass, Amherst - ambi
GaTech - mod
University of Washington - ambi
Columbia University - mod-ambi
UPenn - mod
UMCP - ambi
UT, Austin - ambi
USC - safe
NEU - safe
Johns Hopkins - mod-safe
University of Colorado, Boulder - safe
University of Illinois, Chicago - safe
Ohio State University - safe-mod
Arizona State University - safe
UT, Dallas - safe
STONY Brook - mod
UCLA - mod-ambi
UCSD - mod
UCSB - mod
USSC - which university is this? Assuming UCSC, mod-ambi
TAMU - mod-ambi
NCSU - safe
Rutgers University - safe
University of Utah - safe-mod
NYU - safe-mod

1) Please mention as many details as possible about your academics, research and work-ex, in terms of projects worked on, technologies used, roles/responsibilities handled, papers published/presented, awards/honors obtained, etc. All those have to be put in the misc details section of your UniSearch profile if you expect any help on Edulix.

2) Please take some time out to read this and this thread in their entirety. PLEASE do that before asking questions about universities from a comparison perspective, or jobs, or coursework, or H-1B visas, or "placements", irrespective of which univ/department/program/major you're applying to.
