GRE takers -- Strategies for prep

Hey All,

Lets create a new thread for the people giving GRE in next 2-3 months..
we can discuss our strategies and keep each other motivated..

Idea

it would be great if seniors would provide feedback on my study strategy.. :

i am working in a IT company in India, and life is really hectic (and monotonous).. its really difficult to find even 1-2 hr / day for studying, though weekends are mostly free.. ( i utilize them mostly ).. Embarassed

i began my studies in around january and have taken May 27th date for GRE.. (thank god... right before registration was blocked).. Since january i have been mostly working on my vocab (on and off, haven't been able to devote much time).. I have finished off barron's high frequency wordlist and have started arco's high frequency words.. also did all the word lists once (atleast) but am forgetting most of the words so a revision is underway (Estimated completion date [ECD Wink] -- march end).. i'd be making a list of the words i really am not able to memorize and would mug them up.

Please suggest ways so that i can remember the words/groups for a longer period..
(a) i was thinking of starting a blog or something, and use the words in the entries that I do there..
(b) also, planning to start taking the difficult words to office for revision during tea breaks etc.
© rote learning doesn't seem to be working so well..

With around 2 months in hand, i still have to start working on my RC and other parts of verbal like analogies, antonyms etc. I tried 2 BigBook tests (ya, have got printouts of all of them).. and got around 8 wrong in the 38 questions that were there in the verbal section..

i plan to do around 1-2 RC daily from 1st april onwards, and parallely start my quant/maths studies, though i dnt expect them to be so tough... so will be doing maths say every alternate day on weekdays and more seriously on weekends. I'll be using barron's material for quanta initially.. is that OK ? When should I start giving the CATs ? which ones are the good one's ?

I really want to score 1500+ and I know I can do it.. please help me decide the best strategy, keeping in mind that i have a hectic schedule.. Sad

here's a brief of what i have studied / from where / and what i PLAN to study till my GRE ---
dooms day -- 27th May

Verbal section
----------------
(1) Analysis of issue/argument -- not begun yet, plan to do this a week before GRE..
(2) Vocab --- have been doing slowly and steadily since january, plan to continue revising and strengthening.. strategies listed above. doing mainly from Barron's. never touched normal lewis (its binding opens up all the time Wink
(3) RC -- start doing one-two RC daily from Big Book from 1st april onwards , other material to be used - Kaplans.. please suggest any other .. should i read Hindu also.. daily ? which mags / books should i go through..
(4) analogies, antonyms, sentence completion etc. -- around 15-20 mins daily study from Big book.. which other materials to refer too ?

Quant
-------
(1) To start prep from 1st april... around 1 hr on alternate days.. initially from barron's (13th edition, tht's what i have).. suggest any other material.. ?
(2) will give tests on weekends..

Others
-------
(1) When should i start taking the CATs.. ? which one's first... ? kind of feel like saving powerprep for the end..

Please let me know if there's some area where i should change my study plan/strategy.. and any good material which i am missing out on .. all comments are welcome !

Thanks !

~ G ~

It is not worth an intelligent man's time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that

so that rediff link is kind of irrelevant right now... Embarassed
hope i didn't sound offensive..

have browsed through many threads on the forum, but couldn't find one which gives prep tips strategies keeping in view the hectic life of an indian IT professional (and that too, when one's got just about 2 months in hand.. ) .. i need to make max utilization of whatever time i have got ..

seeking advice of seniors and people who are in a similar situation like mine.. Confused:

what matters is end result...all planing and management will go drain if u falter at d-day...i will advice u to stick to learn words regularly and practise one verbal (complete exercise)daily...its just half an hour practise dude...and if u havent statred wth quant(i am assumin u are applyn 4 MS) KEEP IN MIND THAT QUANT IS MORE IMPORTANT HERE THAN UR VERBAL....atb wth ur prep...and plzz search extensively before postin ,i remember this has been very nicely answered BEFORE IN SOME POST NAMED gre tricks(sth like that)

@anu - sorry for the late reply.. kind of loaded with work Sad I wasn't able to find that thread 'gre tricks' will try more..

with my gre date fast approaching i am getting freaked out Sad ..

gave my first power prep yesterday.. please check this link for the scores -
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p...ingle=true

(PP1 - Got 580v, 800q, total 1380)

Verbal --
--------
I am very dissatisfied with my verbal score Sad
The point to note is that i got my first verbal Q wrong.. does it affect the score THAT badly ?
have done the wordlists twice, almost.. but the prob is that as i go through the newer words, i keep on forgetting the older ones Sad

Quant -
--------
Haven't touched quant yet, other than practice ex from powerprep.. so the 800 is kind of sweet.
1. Which areas of quant should I focus on ? heard that statistics and probability are being asked frequently (my PowerPrep CAT 1 had only 1 question from each if i remember correctly).
2. Is GRE Bible material for statistics and probability enough ?

CATs -
------
Also, can somebody tell me about the CATs available ?
- Powerprep is great but i have already used one, and want to save the other one for say, last week of my prepration.
- I tried barron's companion CD diagnostic test today.. it wasn't computer adaptive in nature.

1. I need to know about the CATs (actual CATs like powerprep, which really adapt questions based on performance.. )
2. Which order should I attempt them in ?

Thanks a lot everyone !

@gunchu

Its really appreciative that you are making a strategy and also sharing it on Edulix for help you need and for the help you can offer to many preparing students. Smile Good work !

Keeping in mind that you have a job, the kind of planning you have done for GRE is good enough...but make it a point that you dont overdo your studying. This might make you feel jaded and you might lose interest too.

Dont dishearten yourself about low verbal score. There is always room for improvement and you have ample of time to work on your mistakes. Yes, the first question of GRE has lot of weight. Your score might go upto +/-90 for the first question. This is the extreme case...but as a minimum scores might differ at about +/-50 or 60 with the first question. So take care of it but dont spend too much of time on the first question. This might kill time for the rest of the questions.

To remember words which you keep forgetting, this is the best method. Each time after you read/revise a wordlist, make a note of the words which you find impossible to remember. Write all those words on a big white paper in capital letters, in a bigger font. Paste this on the wall of your room, such that this is the first thing you see after getting up from your bed. Spend about 3-4 minutes everyday, casually, trying to recollect the meanings of the words. Check if you are right or wrong while remembering. This has helped me a great deal for remembering lot of words. Hope it helps you too.

And also, if you are fed up with holding the book for learning words, you can play some games like Vocaboly which help you in learning and remembering words faster. Let me know if you want the link and the key for this software.

About quant --

The kind of math on the powerprep is generally easy and getting a 800 is obviously easier !! So, dont go by the score for quant on powerprep. Quant from Princeton or Kaplan is also good enough. Try Edulix wiki to know more available stuff for practise of quant. It would be good if you can get hold of some kind of material from coaching centres in your city. This will help a lot.

Its always better if you keep CATs at the end. A week before your GRE date, doing CATs, at 2 /day rate is good. Do it in the order 2-2-2-2-1-1. One day rest before your date Smile else you might ruin your test the next day (this is what I did).

This is a rough info I can provide for AWA. Hope it helps a bit atleast Smile

First, it is very important to make the introduction really impressive. In order to do this, you need to write thinking that the guy who will read your essay doesnt know anything about the topic. So, in a way, you are trying to teach him. For that, you need to build a platform for him and you will do that in the first para of your issue. This will precisely take place in the first line of the first para ( intro para ). For instance, for the topic "public schools building ethics", you can write something about how much knowledge and ethics are important to anybody, irrespective of the stature of the person. Then, after writing your first line of the first para, you drag the content of the first line again in the second but in a more subtle way. Then, write whatever you feel you have to. Then, write the THESIS STATEMENT. This is according to the organisation of an essay in American English. The thesis statement speaks your view on the topic and it occupies the last line of the intro para. THESIS STATEMENT IS MANDATORY.

After your intro para, start writing the body of the essay. What all you think should be included. Write in this pattern ---- Suppose you have got a point or a statement in regard to the topic, write the hint of the statement in the first line of the para. So, that means, you are again building a base to the reader of what you want to say. Then, write the main point which is pivotal in the particular paragraph. Then, write an example relating to that. Follow this kind of structure for every paragraph between the introduction and conclusion paragraphs.

The conclusion paragraph should be as good as the introduction paragraph. The reader of your essay should not have any doubts regarding your essay....so you will have to make the conclusion appealing and clear from any kind of possible ambiguities.

IMPORTANT POINTS :

These are the most important points while writing an issue. Your issue should -
1. be Cohesive
2. Address the topic
3. be Organised
4. give considerable amount of good examples
5. cover all perspectives.

Regarding the arguement, make each flaw of the arguement as one paragraph. You will have 30 mins for arguement writing, so you have to be quick enough in seeing the flaws. Firstly, always attack the conclusion. Then, the beginning sentence of the arguement. Then all assumptions made in the arguement. Also, definitely point out logical flaws, dealing with numbers etc.

Arguement is a very easy thing to write. Take care of the issue more. Dont gulp all your time in deciding what issue to write about from the given two. Always pick the one in which you have ample knowledge about or the one in which you can give good examples.

All good luck to you Very Happy
