Can somebody revive this thread by updating any information they have regarding the present trend in Embedded Systems in their college? It will be really helpful.

I am a current MS Electrical student at UNCC.

Here are my thoughts -
The coursework is really good if your interest is towards Computer engineering (Operating systems, embedded systems, computer architecture).

By far the best course here is the Advanced OS class taken by Dr. Arun Ravindran. The course is really extensive and intense, and a lot of good opportunities will open up for you by just taking this course. For anyone who is interested in systems (Kernel development, device drivers, etc), and does not have a good enough profile to get in to, UNCC is a good safe option. Many who this course cracked Intel, Cisco, TI, etc with quite decent pay.

Computer Architecture is also looking really good here, especially if you are in to general purpose GPUs. Also, there are good courses on high performance computing offered by the computer science department. If you are in to those things it is a good time to come here.

Embedded coursework is being revamped from Fall 17 with more focus on IOT. There are two Embedded courses being offered, one being the core course (oddly named advanced embedded), and another more advanced course. Most of the people end up getting embedded firmware jobs.

Jobs mainly depend upon your skills and network. If you take all the easy courses, and don't skill up, you will have a difficult time getting a job. Network also matters a lot, because referrals gives you interviews calls much easier than directly applying on the company website without a referral. From the Fall 16 batch, quite a few people got internship and some of them even got coops. I got in to a kernel development internship mostly because of the advanced OS class.

Unrelated - Those who are interested in computer architecture, go through the research page of Dr. Hamed Tabkhi - https://coefs.uncc.edu/htabkhiv/
He is a great upcoming professor with terrific research ideas Smile
