Undergrad Internships: why, where, when, how ?

Hello people !

A. The aim of this sub-forum is to:
1. make people understand that undergrad internships will help in improving profiles of individuals.
2. help people understand the possible places where they can intern.
3. act as a medium where people who have interned can help people who want to intern.

B. Need of undergrad internships:
Undergrad internships is a trend that is catching up. Earlier, mostly only IIT students used to intern. But these days, a lot of undergrads intern. Well, what do you achieve from an undergrad internship? Its more about the experience than the money involved. Doing an internship helps you get an exposure of a particular field in your branch of engineering. It can either be an industrial experience or a research experience. When you intern, you get a practical picture of the field. When you study the subject in your engineering curriculum, you may just get a brief idea but interning helps you in understanding if you really like it and would like to take it as a career path ( In my 5th sem, I was planning of doing MS in Remote Sensing/ GIS and hence I interned in the field of GIS. After interning, I realized that GIS is a nice field but I wont be comfortable doing it for 35-40 odd years of my life.) Thus internships, help in bringing some clarity behind the decisions. Many times you hear that students don’t know what they really like … the solution is to intern in the fields that they like.

C. Where to intern?
Industry or research institutions?

Ideally speaking, you should have an experience of both so that you get to know what to expect when you join graduate school or a job. Both are completely different experiences. Industry internships seem more professional but they are more about delivering on the allotted project. Interning in some research organization ( IITs/ IISc/ Central Research Institutes) will give you a taste of research, as you are an undergrad, you are generally nurtured by a PhD candidate or the faculty member. You get a chance of working in the lab or doing some theoretical project …

D. When to apply/ When to start interning?

There is no fixed reply to this … the sooner you start the better it is. Coz multiple internships help you in getting more clarity about the field that you would like to take up for your Masters. Generally people feel that you should do internships in your 3rd year but when they start applying they don’t have much to show on their CV. I think you should start interning right from sem 1. When you start that early you might not know what you wanna do 4 years later but experiencing different fields will be priceless. Also, interning right from sem 1 makes you seem damn serious about your Masters study ( which is a huge positive).

E. The ideal path way:
The best way to start is by applying for internships in IITs/ IISc after sem 1 or sem 2. You can either mail faculty or meet them in person. You should also try for KVPY scholarships (http://www.iisc.ernet.in/kvpy/). Its difficult to get through but if you get it, its pays you well + you get a chance of interning after every semester.
Internships in year 1 and year 2 will give you a rough idea of what you like. After 2nd year, you may apply for the summer camp in IITK. They conduct it specifically to expose you to various sub-branches in your field. It’s a good experience.
In 3rd year and 4th year, you can apply for internships in research organization in India/ abroad and in the industry in India/ abroad. If you have interned before, it helps you a lot in getting calls from abroad.

The above path isn’t any “ideal” path but is a good way to start things. You can start interning anytime, it all depends on you … when to start, where to intern, which field.

F. Other benefits of internships:
1. Your advisor either in a research organization or industry may give your LORs, which may be more “weighty” than the “regular” college LORs.
Many times, if you intern at IITs/ IISc/ foreign univs, your advisor will recommend you to his peers and you might get a positive reply from some faculty in USA even before you apply.

2. Some internships pay you as well.
You are paid if you intern in IITs/ IISc … something around Rs 4000 per month.
Similarly, the minimum amount that you will be paid in Europe is around 650 euros per month ( as per the VISA norms) … just check the figure though.

Some intern tips. (IT specific)

1. The world of open source - Great way to spend your summer. Lot's of open source projects originate at universities and when they go global, they usually have Profs in advisory roles. So this is a great opening to open up a productive stream of communication with a Prof. Of course this involves smartly choosing the organization.

This is unpaid but likely to be programming intensive which is good as you'll be a code monkey for the first few years of your IT career. Good for securing oncampus job involving coding also. However while it provides you a good opportunity to prof-let, don't think it does much for profile improvement.

These organizations are ready to give certificates in most of the cases for college purposes.

2. Google Summer of Code - Following from previous, GSoC is an awesome opportunity. $4500 stipend. If you have some open source experience, then you are through mostly. Everyone should apply, take a shot.

Advantages are similar as outlined above + paid.

3. IIT and IISc - Welsh Konig has outlined it in his post above.

4. Industrial - Lots of people do this internship as its quite easy to get it through some "connection" i.e. family member or family friend working in the company. However you will mostly sit around and maybe do an unimaginative project which won't be used in the company. So choose 1+2+3. If it is an official internship program then it is a good idea to do it.

5. If you are clear in which subarea you want to work in, start looking for foreign interns. A good keyword is SURF, most universities (even some IITs) have SURF programs. Most foreign unis do not allow international students to apply to their SURF programs but some do. Unis in Europe are generally easier to crack than US and can be used as a good stepping stone to better internships.

Good luck!

I have done my B.Tech from NIT Trichy last year..... I will apply for MS in VLSI Design for FALL 2010 later this year..... I am interested in doing an internship.... I would like to know which of these might be possible for me:

1. Internship in some US University like ASU/NCSU/VT,etc.
2. Internship in some Indian Semiconductor Company (Is it possible without any contacts.... If yes, how do i approach.....)

Is there any other possibility....... Also given that i have done some research during my B.Tech,i think i may have a decent chance if i could contact the profs in US/Industry people in India through some proper ways.....

Back in Edulix. Can provide suggestions for prospective Ph.D applicants only, as I am unaware of the trends for MS admits since last few years.

Some univs ask for bench fees ie. you are expected to pay for your internship. I dont think you should select such offers coz spending so much isnt justified, you can get similar lab ex in IITs/IISc.

1. Dont ask me what those "?" mean in the spellings ... just google the univs.
2. When you want to learn more about faculty members in German univs, their profile pages are in German, some do have an English version ... use Google language tools to translate their research interests ... I used that extensively.
3. Knowing German isnt mandatory to intern in German univs.

4. German companies are open to internships ie. I have seen German companies offering internship spots more easily as compared to other companies. If you wanna intern in companies, it helps to know German ( it might not be necessary to know German though) ... but learning German is a huge benefit, some positions are for people who know German, infact for such positions they conduct telephonic interviews in German.

Korea is not an internship destination for most people. But I heard from a friend that an internship in Korea is hard work and almost always results in some publication. The amount of hard work you put in is suitably rewarded in the longer run … Korean univs have a good reputation with US faculty especially KAIST, Korea Univ.

Hi,
I am pursuing Chemical Engineering at BITS Pilani, and aiming for MS in the same subject few years down the line.
i have already done a summer internship at Jindal Steels ( it included plant visits+industrial exposure+two technical projects). However I strongly feel that to get a real essence of a project that makes me have an extra edge while applying for MS i should try for a research project in the coming summer, and I badly want to have one at any of the universities in Europe. Can anyone throw some light on the feasibility of getting that kind of opportunity?
PS:My cgpa is NOT high enough to apply through DAAD (it's around 7.5), do I still stand a chance?
