University of Freiburg (IMTEK) Germany Admit and more

Yes… Yes… Yes…. It’s the end of a long and painful struggle I was going through…

Got admit from University of Freiburg (IMTEK) Germany for Microsystems (MEMS). It is the Germany's largest research institute dedicated to all aspects of MEMS. This is the website: http://www.imtek.de/index_en.php .Although in the first year I will have compulsory courses in all areas which play a role for microsystems engineering, in my second year I will try to specialize in the microelectronics concentration area which involves Analog CMOS circuit designing, my ultimate passion. Very Happy

It’s a big relief for me now after the fiasco in US applications.

Still waiting for UTK and USC…. But not as eagerly as before. Wink

Will need a comparison between USC and Freiburg. Costwise no doubt Freiburg will be the best option (10 lakhs max for two yrs), but I want to ensure the post MS job prospects here in Germany for non EU students.

Do chip in your views soon!!

Cheers!!

1. Congratulations ApplauseApplauseApplauseApplause
2. Why multi-post? Results 2009 Forum would have been best place for this! ConfusedConfused

thanks dhariyash, killing.vibes, seshabalaji, deepu_29 for your wishes.

I need your views regarding University of Freiburg and whether its better to join compared to USC or UTK.

And sorry for the multiple posts. But I guess posting this again in results forum will increase the multiple posts. What to do? Confused

dont multipost, if you dont get enough replies here or on engineering & sc. forum then ask madmax or some other mod to move the thread to the results forum

Yes yogi

I have already gone through this post from abhishek. Its very informative. Further research prospects in MST are really excellent here it seems. But my main target is to have a job in my hand after two years.

What about the opportunities here for job after MS??

Germany is good in MEMS. In US i think you can stay maximum of 3-5 months after studies, but in Germany it is 2yrs(1yr as student + 1yr as job search, both with 720hrs working visa). Even some people used to say Germany is better than US for MEMS. Mostly people in IMTEK do phd after there, that is what they expecting( they have a lot of departments specializing in different areas of microsystem).

If you are coming to Germany aim for 2-2.5yrs completing your masters. You call Abhishek and ask him about his seniors, since job opportunities in microsystems are not clear to me. If you are smart enough you can complete your degree by less than 4 lakhs since there are a lot of Hiwi opportunities and thesis is also paid which is very difficult(or even not there) in many other universities.

@yogi

Yes, the paid thesis is the best part of IMTEK. Will considerably bring down the cost of study.

Actually in IMTEK their first batch for English MSc programme in Microsystems started in 2007. So even the seniors dont have much idea regarding the job opportunities for us there after completion of masters as the first batch is yet to pass out.

BTW what is the duration of PhD in Germany? Are you also in MEMS in TUHH?

I am doing MEMS at TUHH. Here mostly Indian students go for microelectronics(VLSI-ckt design) or optical electronics. For microsystem, you have to work on fabrication or on finite element method. For fabrication, you have to get used to clean room which will take atleast 6 months experience. Mostly students specialising in microsystems opt for Phd. I think this because masters is not well enough for a good knowledge of microsystem, where experience matters more since it is process oriented(based on lot of lab experience). I remember one time my prof in microsystem showed me an accelerometer done by a student(phd) of him in Bosch. PhD in Germany will be on average of 4 years. I will say when you think of German masters, think of 2.5yrs(not 2yrs).

@yogi

Actually my major area of interest is Analog CMOS Circuit Design. But along with microelectronics, the first yr course in IMTEK deals with a wide variety of subjects which are a kind of new for me. Like micromechanics, optical microsystems, micro-actuators, micro-fluidics, biomedical microsystems etc, something which I had never dealt before in my life!! And these are compulsory modules for the first yr!! This really scares me Shocked

But a thing of relief for me is that they provide us a choice for the second yr so that we can choose our area of concentration. I will preferably choose microelectronics and sensors and actuators, which at least covers CMOS analog front end design.

But I would like to know from you whether Analog design is a substantial part of Microsystems/MEMS or just a small part of it with no substantial importance.

If you want to do Analog ckt design, then IMTEK is not a good course for you since they more specialise in microsystems. Microelectronics deals with device physics, optical electronics, ckt design etc...
Mikroelektronik,Circuits and systems,Life sciences: Biomedical engineering(not sure about this) are the only courses for microelectronic point of view. Rest all are core microsystems in which you have to know mechanical, optics also. Even sometimes you have to revise these basics. I dont like microsystems since i dont know much about mechanical and process of experiements in fab lab. I will advise you to go through video lecture of IIT in youtube to know what is microsystem.

You told that u dont like microsystems but I guess in TUHH as well u might have taken the compulsory course work of microsystems along with microelectronics. So what was your experience in those subjects from core area of microsystems related to Mechanical Engineering?

And as far as I know microelectronics is a part of microsystems. So in IMTEK microsystems course I might get some thesis work in microelectronics in my second year. Whats ur say over this?

Moreover I dont have any other better choice than IMTEK since I got rejected from TUHH and TU Kaiserslautern. I am also waiting for University of Magdeburg but not so eagerly. One more admit I have from University of North Carolina Charlotte (USA) where the course is pure Analog Circuit Design, but again the university is not good ranked so I am not eager to join here. So I have a sort of compulsion to join IMTEK.
