Overview of Communication

Wireless in ENTS concentrates mostly on RF design, operations, GSM etc. This is my senior's feedback about wireless courses, job prospects etc in ENTS program:

"This course is all about GSM, network planning and optimization, designs for 3-G. Jobs could range from a Switch Engineer to a GSM Enterprise Account Manager designing and selling all GSM related products like SMS Gateway, Value Added Services like Blackberry, Enterprise Voice Based Applications, Managed Voice, Centrex, Widex, Audion Conferencing Bridges, Vehicle Tracking etc and the list goes on as these are the jobs one would get....
Also one would really make a killing on the Systems Integrator Space as large organizations like Motorola, Nokia, NEC, Ericsson make a killing by selling crores of equipment to these so called Wireless Service Providers. However there are not a lot of courses in the CDMA space as Sprint and Verizon are CDMA players while T-Mobile and Cingular are the more prominent GSM counterparts."

There is a fundamental difference between networks and communications. Right now let me take wireless, wired, Point to point, Point to multi point, Ad-hoc, Multiple access networks etc.,

Communications in general deals with the lowest level in a network protocol. You guys remember different layers in network models right?

Communications deals with the physical, MAC, sometimes network layer as well.

Whereas Networks generally deals with higher layers: presentation, application, Transport, etc.,

The subjects that you generally study for communications are:
Information theory, Wireless Communications, Estimation and Detection (though it’s also signal processing), Stochastic process, Mobile communications, Digital communication, Channel coding, Error control coding, Satellite communication etc.,

Subject that you encounter in networks are:
Wireless networks, Ad-hoc Networks, Network performance, Computer networks, Mobile data networks, LAN, Wan, Man, (CDMA,TDMA)Multiple access networks, Data networks etc.,

The general trend is (though not necessarily limited to):

If you study network courses your job description would be network programmer/engineer.
Study communication courses your job description would be Network designer/engineer/developer.

Generally people studying communications have more scope for research (or people who want to do PhD are going to take these courses).
And people who want to go for a job take the Network courses.

Most network courses are offered in universities that specialize in Telecommunication and wireless communication courses.

Overview of Signal Processing

* Communications Aspect of Signal Processing

Communication and signal processing are closely related fields in electrical and computer engineering. Communication is the process of transferring information from one point in time and space to another point. Signal processing deals with signal representation, as well as signal design and filtering.
* Digital Image Processing

Digital image processing is the use of computer algorithms to perform image processing on digital images. Images can range from ordinary ones taken with a Digital Camera to Medical related images like X-rays and even the Images from distant stars.
Again there are several sub-categories here: Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition, etc.
* Audio/Speech Processing

Audio signal processing is the intentional alteration of auditory signals, or sound. As audio signals may be electronically represented in digital, signal processing can happen in Digital Domain.
Speech Processing may in turn refer to Speech Recognition, Speech Synthesis & Speech Compression.
* Other Signal Processing Subfields

1. Sonar and Radar Signal Processing
2. Sensor Array Processing
3. Spectral Estimation
4. Statistical Signal Processing
5. Biomedical Signal Processing
6. Seismic Data Processing

18. University of Californai at Santa Barbara
19. University of California at Irvine
20. University of Florida(surprisingly pretty good)
21. Georgia Tech

Hello, I'm doing my final year from BNM institute of technology, Bangalore under VTU. I wrote gre and the score was as follows-
Verbal-570 &
Quant-800

I am yet to recieve my TOEFL scores
I applied for the following universities after my gre

1) university of maryland, college park
2) wisconsin, madison
3) texas a & m, college station
4) rutgers university, new brunswick.

My area of interest is in the field of communications/ processing. Could you please give me an insight of the above universities?
Also, if possible, please let me know which other colleges would be better in the field concerned.

Please reply.

Hello,
I am interested in doing an MS in Signal Processing and i have my initial list made. I was hoping to contact a senior who could tell me about the job opportunities that would be open to a SP graduate. Which companies hire them and what is the pay like etc. I am posting this as i couldn't find this info in any of the threads i have been through.
Hope to glean some information here.

Cheers. Smile
