Hello Folks
As you that there is one thread titled as same which contains the list of all the University Based on CS Specialization. But that thread was started by taro_curly way back in 2008.Few Senior Members feel that this list is old and it should be updated. So I am calling all the seniors and alumni to chip in and contribute towards the making of new list for CS specialization.
You can find the thread here.

Please share your views here but try to make the thread as clean as possible. All irrelevant posts in this thread would be deleted.
Once we have the consensus I will modify my post and organize the whole list of Universities according to there Specialization.

Here is the list of concentrations:-

Algorithms, Computational Geometry etc.

Artificial Intelligence and allied fields
(If there is no specific sub-field mentioned, then there is work in multiple areas there)

Computational Biology, Bioinformatics and related areas

Computer Architecture

Databases and allied fields

Data Mining

Embedded Systems
(CS department only. Also look at the ECE thread, http://www.edulix.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=54794 which is the original source for this)

Formal Methods

Graphics and allied fields : Game Development

High Performance Computing

Human-Computer Interaction

Networks

Programming Languages, Compilers and related areas

Robotics

Scientific Computing

Security

Software Engineering

Systems (Operating Systems, Distributed Systems)

Theory

Stony Brook University

Systems
Security

Not completely sure about Computer Vision / Graphics. Will let you know

My Profile evaluations are based on previous years pattern and views of university Alums.

So don't hold it against me if I have suggested that MIT is safe but you get a reject this year !!

For machine Learning :

1. CMU -- this place kicks arse at several kinds of ML. They have Tom Mitchell , who is now working on Never Ending Learning. They have a great stats department which has people like Wassermann, Lafferty. They have Christos Falostos ( check the spelling ) and Avrin Blum ( learning Theory) . They now have Aarti Singh as well. In one line, if you want to work in any sub-area of ML, go to this place ( assuming you get admitted)

2. Alberta -- statistically, this school has the 2nd highest number of professors working on ML. ( Note:statistically). But, the prima donna there is Reinforcement Learning.

3. Stanford -- Its stanford

4. UMass Amherst-- They have McCullum and now they have Hanna Wallach(beauty+brains). David Mimmo, James Allan and Bruce Croft ( in case IR is your thing)

5. Toronto -- Brendan Frey and his lab, Radford Neal,Geoff Hinton ( Deep Learning ) and his lab . This place is goooood.

6. University College London -- Gatsby Lab is what makes this place good at ML(Mostly Graphical Models, non parametric methods et al). They also have David Barber who is doing good work on Time Series Analysis.

7. UBC -- Has Kevin Murphy, Nando De Freitas, Laks Lakshamanan ( off the top of my head).

I will keep adding more as i get time . But, i would suggest that whoever suggests universities, should atleast add a few prof names and also add any other info that maybe relevant. Saying that some place is good at ML is a very vague statement. ML is huge . Similarly, saying some place is good at AI also is a very vague statement. Please add specific details if possible.

8.

Rarely on Edulix. If you need AI/ML help, someone will help you reach out.

Good luck with your applications, and if you are ever in Vancouver, let me know.

nitin.prabhu from where you got this data ?

State University of New York, Stony Brook (NLP) ShockedShocked Ye kab hua
There are a few Profs working in this field but still its not that great yet.

I think there is a thread by AV15 or Theo in which all the Alum and current students are chipping in to clean Univ specific threads and profile evaluation. You should take their input also as they know things better.

My Profile evaluations are based on previous years pattern and views of university Alums.

So don't hold it against me if I have suggested that MIT is safe but you get a reject this year !!

Stony Brook has few Profs working in NLP but its not that great yet. These Profs are new and still haven't done anything remarkable.

Just having a webpage will not be the right criteria to add to this list.
Every college has 1-2 Prof working in different Cs field but it is not that the Univ is great in that field.

I hope you got my point.

My Profile evaluations are based on previous years pattern and views of university Alums.

Yep code_striker I got your point. Smile I have left out SUNY-SB from my list.

a7x

Your knowledge in ML area is more than mine. Smile Yes, we can add professor details along with just university name but this will probably lead to a lot of clutter in the current format.

I think we can present this in a much better way.

Quote: University of Washington (only PhD available)
You can still graduate with an MS if you satisfy the credits requirement at UW CS (although, almost nobody does that). The admissions are in general for the graduate program and it is inferred usually that this is a PhD, so admissions evaluations are done on a PhD scale.

Add to that list for Computer Graphics - UC Berkeley, USC, Northwestern U and NYU CS (and the MIT Media Labs if you may).
