EduMentoring: Get a taste of research right here on Edulix

Over the years, we have kept telling students who want to make it to the top universities for their MS/PhD that they need to get research experience. For the majority of students in the second tier of colleges in India, this is far easier said than done. Even if they were motivated enough to try things for themselves, there are few people to guide them. Research papers aren't necessarily the best way to get started since they aren't intended for newcomers to the field. And professors at the top Indian institutes often look for people who already have some experience - which leads to an unfortunate chicken and egg situation.

To try and mitigate this problem, we are piloting a new programme here on Edulix: EduMentoring. This initiative is the brainchild of Edulix user, Pythea (it was given its name by Edulix_Editor).

In EduMentoring, graduate students volunteers in various universities abroad (mentors) will guide undergraduate students (mentees) on a project. The project may be offered by the mentors or proposed by the mentees (we strongly recommend the latter). The project could be a research problem, reproducing results reported in the literature, a variation of published work, a literature survey, or anything else of mutual interest to both mentors and mentees.

The goal of this programme is to give undergraduate students a taste of research as well as to introduce them to the scientific literature. Depending on the project chosen and the amount of effort put into it by all parties, there is the possibility of the work being publishable.

Mentees will be chosen by the mentors based on mutual research interests and expertise possibly after some sort of selection process. Mentors and mentees will decide on a set of deliverables as well as the commitment each will make; for instance, regular meetings via Skype to discuss progress.

As a pilot, there are a few projects that the mentors have made available that they are willing to supervise. You can read the descriptions in the Academia forum.

If you have any projects in mind that you would like someone to mentor, please feel free to post a brief description in the Academia forum along with the broad area (CS, EE etc.) and the sub-area that it is related to (e.g. Signal processing, AI, networks, HCI). If there is a mentor who is willing to guide you, they will contact you.

These are early days for EduMentoring and we are still soliciting volunteers to mentor projects. The more enthusiasm there is from the mentees, the stronger the case we can make while asking mentors to sign up for and commit time to this programme. Remember also that the mentors are also putting time and effort into this: if you stop showing interest in this, they will too.

Thanks and here's hoping that we can make EduMentoring a success.

Right now, we have a few projects offered by mentors in the following areas:

We have mentors who are willing to guide projects in their area of expertise:

GravityEyelids: Building Energy Performance, Computational Photography, Urban Acoustics, Fluid Interfaces and Computer Graphics (does not include computer animation or game design).

Ancalagon The Black: Social Network Analysis, collaboration/CSCW

praxair1: Power System projects related to Application of Neural Networks and Smart Grids.

Pythea: AI

@[taro_curly] : HPC, compilers.

If any of the mentors have a project to offer, they will post it in the Academia forum. I shall also update this thread with any new projects that are offered.

As usual, if you have any questions, go right ahead and ask.

I am not very active on this forum any longer. Most PM's will not receive a response.

taro_curly Awesome initiative! Applause
Interested to know if there would be mentors from other disciplines like Mechanical Engg. (in my case) as well to join us?

I will not evaluate profiles but I will respond to specific queries. Please tag me @[The Trademark] if you're expecting a response.

Hieee,

I would like someone to mentor a project on Information Retrieval, basically a Contextual Search Engine. It is a big project and would require lot of skiils and dedicated work. Is anyone having an experience of IR interested....??

Really interesting stuff and a great initiative!
Its great that edulix is headed in these interesting directions!

I found taros and ATBs projects mighty interesting, it makes me want to get involved in them while I am out of grad-school doing a "comparatively boring real job" (looking for that hallowed 2nd publication before applying for a PhD Smile )

I have a pet project on near-linear time estimators for the Steiner tree problem that I might put up to see if anyone is interested as well Smile

UCLA Thread - http://www.edulix.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=87022

Please do not tag me for profile evaluations : I've been away from the MS/application scene long enough to not have relevant information.

Excellent initiative and kudos to the brainchild(ren) behind this.
@ Edulix_Editor: I just passed out this May and currently working at the characterization facility at IISc. My projects previously were centered around VLSI design. Here i'm handling equipments that characterize MEMS devices and currently doing some reading on the same lines. I would be happy to work on a project with you. Do let me know.

This seems like a very interesting idea. I am a bit concerned about how well remote mentoring would work but I am willing to give it a shot.

Count me in for mentoring NLP/ML/IR projects. I would be much more interested in hearing what projects folks here have in mind rather than deciding on a project on my own.

FYI, I am pretty busy during the week (as I have a full time job and am no longer a PhD student) so this will be something that I can mostly only work on over the weekends. To this end, I would prefer to work with folks who are self-motivated and don't need a lot of hand holding.

HI All,
This is a very good initiative for Indian students who don't get research opportunities in their colleges or who don't know how to start doing a research.I am one of them who doesn't know anything about research but I want to do research so some guidance from seniors would be appreciated.
I want to do a research in computer architecture field. If any senior has a project that a undergrad can work on please let me know.
Thank You.

@BagS,

I am glad that you are interested. Right now, we don't have anyone from architecture here (that I know of), but keep checking back here. We might get a volunteer sometime in the future.

I am not very active on this forum any longer. Most PM's will not receive a response.

TOI - Tamil Nadu Ruined Technical Education - IIT K Head

Some of you might have read this Article in Times of India. It illustrates the pathetic condition of Technical Education in India. The Truth be told, other than IIT, NIT, BITS and VIT [Vellore], none of the other University are providing any Technical Education.

This is why Edu Mentoring is absolutely necessary. I was in Pune University and it was absolutely horrible. I was interested in lot of research activities and did take part in National Technical Symposiums but all that did not matter. Also had pathetic faculty, who were totally unaware about anything related to research.

Edu mentoring will be a BIG help to students like me (though i passed out). Atleast they will have someone to go to. I totally and whole heartedly support Edu Mentoring, Thanks a lot Seniors.

Edulix_Editor Expecting a project from you. I am very interested in working with you.

Don't tag me for anything other than NCSU (IE/IMSE). I am outdated with admit trends. Don't ask me for eval since I am outdated. Thanks!
