GRS-simulation Vs COMMAS
[font=Times New Roman][size=small]
I have got admit into both GRS-sim ( German research school At RWTH Aachen ) & COMMAS (at University of Stuttgart). The electives at GRS are pulling me towards the course but coding pulls me a step backwards.
Can you please advice me as to which course has better career prospects?

RE: GRS-simulation Vs COMMAS
Before anything else, please update your infobank profile properly.
1) Please mention as many details as possible about your academics, research and work-ex, in terms of projects worked on, technologies used, roles/responsibilities handled, papers published/presented, awards/honors obtained, etc. All those have to be put in the misc details section of your UniSearch profile if you expect any help on Edulix. Also, before requesting for profile evaluations, please go through this excellent post.
2) Please take some time out to read these three threads in their entirety. PLEASE do that before asking questions about universities from a comparison perspective, or jobs, or coursework, or H-1B visas, or "placements", irrespective of which univ/department/program/major you're applying to.
I love to read, and then I regurgitate. I write - a lot - as my posts here and on other outlets would show. I do not make apologies for what I write (and how long it is). I do not sugarcoat things either. I don't tolerate vague questions, for any reasons - ignorance arising out of an inability to locate information when the necessary tools to do so (i.e. the internet, libraries, university websites, other forums/bulletin boards, etc.) are readily available, is not any kind of an acceptable excuse.

RE: GRS-simulation Vs COMMAS
Hi all,
Nice to see a interesting discussion here. I am a current GRS Simulation Science student(with mechanical engineering background). Vindhya had already taken a opinion about the course from me. However, for the benefit of future students, I am posting my opinion here:
- Yes indeed, the course involves lot of programming. But, I am really convinced, to know whats happening behind today's commercial solvers, we must understand the real math and the programming effort went on them. And simply suggesting to opt out of the course, just because it involves intense programming does not sound well.
Of course, you are not writing codes for problems, for which you have no clue about it. You will be coding the numerical part of your application area(could be structural, fluid mechanics, physics, chemistry, biology, etc.), which is actually interesting here.
Cheers,
Sathish

I was looking at the course structure of GRS for the first year. But there are compulsory courses like quantum computing and also molecular modelling etc. I am from a mechanical background and wish to stay on the same path.
1. So how relevant these courses would be for a mechanical profile?
2. How difficult they would be if I have no idea about quantum stuff?

Well firstly be sure if you are going to come here. Yes there is a lot of work assignments every week in quantum, parallel programming and PDE's. I warn you you wont have time to breath. At time math courses, quantum etc will be totally abstract but then if you know what you want to do then after your 1st year youll realise things aren't bad. Its though yes but its a course to push ppl into computational research so you cant complain.
And please do not assume that quantum and molecular dynamics have no role in "Mechanical Engineering" without doing adequate research into the fundamental areas you are involved in.
Its not qunatum computing course, it just quantum mechanics course. I myself know a couple of ppl who did mechanical and are completely into physics after joining the course. I too loved quantum so I'm planning to do something with engineering application(thermal). Few more who are totally into developing parallel codes. And also dont go by the handbook, lots of courses arent offered too. You can definitely take up thermal/fluids electives once you are here but I feel the whole purpose of the program is lost and most of them are offered in german etc etc and youll realise that spending all the time in enng courses is not worth it. If you are scared/have doubts/apprehensive about having to push yourself stay away. Not trying to scare you at all.
I have exams and I don't log into this place often. But you are always welcome to send me a mail for other details. I'd be happy to help/motivate say things as they are about this program.
