FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Hi People

I have received Australian Leadership Award Scholarship (ALAS) 2008 for my PhD in Computer Science at The Australian National University (ANU), Canberra, Australia. It was the only Aussie University in which I applied Very Happy, simply because it is the best down-under. I am overjoyed !!

My profile

http://users.rsise.anu.edu.au/~aasthana/

BUT I would like to share this very important information with students of EDULIX. This year around 370 ALAS were given out for MS/PHD/MBA in Asia-Pacific region. From what I have heard very few (around 9) Indians were selected. Countries like Indonesia, Vietnam etc have got more then 30 ALAS each this year. Only reason being that not many Indian students knew about these scholarships.

Of course these scholarships are for Australia so it is of no use for people who just want to go for US universities. But for students like me who want to go for higher studies at any good university with good funding, missing these opportunities can cost a lot. AFTERALL, A SCHOLARSHIP IS A SCHOLARSHIP.

Only 9/370 (approx) is just not good by India’s standard, which is even bad when we see that these are offered only to students from Asia-pacific. We can easily go past countries like Indonesia and Vietnam…..A CAKE WALK. Below are few links to these scholarships –

Endeavor Scholarships –

http://www.endeavour.deewr.gov.au/

Australian Leadership Award Scholarships –

http://www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar/ala.cfm

On Edulix there are many students who have much better profile then mine and I have no doubt that We can crack 50 ALAS next year if not more. Few universities like ANU, Univ of Melbourne, Univ of Sydney and UNSW are surely worth it. Also, over next 5 years, number of these scholarships are going to be around 19000, which is huge number considering the value of these scholarships. Refer to the links above for more details.

In case you people have any query, just post it here and I will try to get back to you asap.

Cheers to Edulix….It has been a great help
Akshay

Thanks a lot people.
Hope it helps some of the Edulixians as not many are aware of these scholarships and is the only reason why we see people from Indonesia, PNG etc getting these scholarship. Even people from Maldives got the scholarship. Hope to see some of the Indians applying and coming here on scholarships.
Cheer!
Few more scholarships -

I'll have you know that the Maldives have an excellent educational system. They are just a very tiny place, is all.

It's great that you got the scholarship - congratulations! And I think it's good that you are willing to answer questions about it.

@camphor

I bet they do. Even SL have a great education system (Free + every Student get a small stipend to attend the Uni aswell.) But the thing I will like to point out that two of my friends from Maldives did their Bach from ANU itself so I am not sure whether many ppl in Maldives are aware of these scholarship too.

But Frankly, I do feel that students from { Good Indian Uni + Decent profile + A bit of research experience } have a better chance then our Maldivian counterparts if they apply. Especially people who need funding to go ahead and those who dont mind taking a higher degree course from country apart from US. But again, thats my personal viewpoint. People might have a diff views all together.

Best of Luk for your application. You have an awsome profile. Keep it up.

Cheer!
Akshay

I am planning to do my MS in Industrial Engineering...i was wondering if its a good idea applying to atleast the top 3 univs in Australia apart from applying to the univs in USA...

Are those programs good enough to be comparable to those in the US...

and wat bout the placements there...

is it possible to get admits with the following profile(to either ANU,Univ of Melb or Univ of Sydney)

ACAD
Course and college:Manufacturing Engg,College of Engg,Anna Univ.
CGPA: 7.6

GRE:1400

yet to take toefl

RESEARCH:
have co-authored two journals and done two projects(as part of curriculam) so far.
