Well, first of all, I am sure that none of you have ever thought about going this route! I am sure that there will be very less takers for this thread, but am summarizing my experiences in this thread, to help that 1 in a 1000 guys to get through a Japanese university.
The primary motivation for stating this thread and something about me:
I am working through TCS and for a high profile Japanese Car company. I have travelled to Japan about five times as a consultant and lived there for one year. Spent three + years on acquiring info on how to get into a Japanese university for MS. I have studied Japanese with my engineering for like 3 years….
Only sad part is: Now I am running out of time and want to get into doing my MS. I am a newbie again and going to Germany to do my MS.

Why Japan?

1. Well Japan is a hub for all the latest technology. Let it be cars, electronics, computers and hardware, earthquake engineering, environmental engineering, and everything you can imagine, seriously you have to travel to Japan to believe it.

2. Japan’s universities are highly ranked, they have valued degrees, have latest technology and infra to support, and very very very good teachers. Go to a ranking site and see for yourself. I was fortunate to interact with many ppl during the process including heads and senior professors from Tokyo University. Many seniors, may be from US, can give their opinions on this as they might have had visiting faculty from Japan.

3. Not many Indians going there. Increases chance for an admit, that for scholarship. The professor I know from ToDai (Tokyo univ.) said I was the ONLY Indian applicant that year.

4. Many pre-arrival scholarships: Japanese government, some private institutes offers a full scholarships. Applicant to recipients ratio is 3:1, worst case. !!!!!

5. No racial bias in Japan. We come from land where Buddhism originated, hence these ppl respect us.

I will fill this thread over time…. But you are interested pls shoot questions.

Can you please provide us with some more information ? I mean how to apply and all etc. because when I saw their site, which was 3 months back, I guess the university ask for some sort of written test conducted by them only, for the admissions and most of he courses are obviously not in English, which is the main concern.

Japanese Proficiency requirements:

1. If your course is in Japanese then you have to know Japanese to level 1 ( Four years of study)

2. If your course is not in Japanese or in english, then it is recommendd that you atleast have Level 5 (3 months course) of Japanese, just like german universities.

3. All english courses are completely taught in english (Unlike some europian schools where it is only partial in english)

Admission tests:

1. ALMOST ALL english taught courses or International courses have pre-arrival admissions, this is an observation

2. Here is a list (Not comprehensive) of courses taught in english.

Ill give infromation about pre-arrival scholorships in my next post

@pramod:

Just like our univs. Japanese system has these so called entrence test.... which are in fact tough.... but if u go with
1. someting like full scholarship, prf. (if government scholorship, called MEXT or mombusho then you NEVER give entrance tests)
2. if you apply for programs with pre arrival admission (link),
you generally dont have entrace test

Have done MS from Japan or Stuttgart?? Smile

I wanted to know if these English courses from well recognized institutes are equally recognized or not? What about opportunities after Masters over there.
Can you also tell a bit about the fees over there? How much does education + living cost?
I am interested in MS in computers

sidhusavi excellent work! I would suggest that you should compile all your information in the first post itself (by editing it) and can bounce the thread stating that there has been an update. This turns out to be more helpful as all the information in concentrated.

I would like to add a couple of things here. Please understand that I'm not against studying in Japan or anything of that sort. The primary reason why I would not go to Japan is because of the lack of diversity there - totally contrary to what I would want from a degree abroad. Smile

5. No racial bias in Japan. We come from land where Buddhism originated, hence these ppl respect us.

Are you sure ? I have heard just the opposite !

http://www.kamalsinha.com/mitsubishi/dis...ation.html
http://www.mitsubishisucks.com/resources/india.html
These are just two of many such instances.

My aim is not to begin an online war about how each country is racist and that it will exist everywhere.
My sole aim is to inform readers that no matter what we did for the world, we will always be discriminated and making an absolute statement of "No racial bias" is incorrect.

Hey guys...Thanx for starting this topic to help students with information of other tha US univ...
Well, I am searching some non-US univ for my masters in VLSI...I am planning to apply to ASIAN as well as German univ...But the prob is dat i do not hav much info abt Asian univ...I have shortlisted a few such as HKUST, NTU, NUS, GIST and Univ of Tokyo cuz all these have good reputation for IC design course...But i have a few queries..
1. How gud is the course content of the Asian univ as compared to US univ?
2. Some univs like NUS n HKUST have only 1-yr Master prog w/o internship. So does it provide the students with the sufficient exposure to the field?
3. How well is the degree from these univs valued internationally?
4. I also want to know abt the job opportunities in the Asian countries.

If anyone is having any idea abt Asian univ, plz provide me the same...It shall be of great help to me as i need to finalize my list asap...

@sidhusavi
I checked on the website of Univ of Tokyo...First of all it is very difficult to get info frm the website abt course content. Secondly, I am not very sure abt the entrance test they are asking for...If u hav any idea, plz help me out..

Thanx in advance.

I passed my B.tech in ECE from NIT Rourkela India. I just landed upon this thread by chance. After researching a bit, I think Japan can be a good destination for MS, especially if one can get the MEXT scholarship. But, please tell me....How tough or east it is for a foreigner to find a job in Japan after MS?? Does knowledge of Japanese language matters a lot for getting Jobs?? , or english is ok....I want to work in the automotive / embedded electronics industry......Do you have any info regarding the health of the automotive industry in japan??
